In the round-up: Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer says Sergio Perez’s new three-year contract is a “big deal” for the team.
What they say
Szafnauer says Perez’s to commit to the team for the long term shows his confidence in their plans for the future:Sergio knows what our plans are and what we’re trying to do for the future. And for him to say ‘I want to be here for three years’ is a big deal. In years past it was always year by year by year. So that’s an indicator.
I think it’s great. He knows us as well, he knows the team, he knows what we’re trying to do and on a Sunday he’s a great driver.
He did a great job in Spa, very calculated overtaking manoeuvres, doesn’t take too many risks. In all the years I’ve been working with him he’s got a very cool head, knows what he’s doing. I think he’s only lost it once which was in Singapore when he went into one of the Williams, Sirotkin. But apart from that cool head, very good on a Sunday, great overtaking, defends well.

Losing four corners from Singapore’s track layout would be making virtue of necessity, says Nick:
I’m glad that silly little detour is going. Hopefully the track will go straight on from turn 16 to 19 with no silly chicanes or water splashes in the way. It will create an excellent overtaking spot at 20 and shorten the lap time considerably.

Which would mean what? Lance outqualifies Sergio one out of three times instead of none out of three. LOL

That’s only happened with Alonso and poor Stoffel at mclaren.
Just to be sure Alonso stayed on top.

Couldn’t agree less with cotd. T20 to T23 are the real overtaking killers on the track, hard to run close on that final section, the preceding 4 turns do see overtaking or costly mistakes.

Looking at the front wing, more and more teams have adopted the Ferrari style, pretty much just RB and Merc with the traditional front wing.

Ironic that RB and Merc seem to have better chassis, despite not having this front wing most teams are now adapting.
Ferrari is also better in dirty air is it not?
Maybe midfield teams benefit from better racing performance?

Shout out to Sterling Moss. 90 today. When I started watching F1 in the early 80s they use to compare the former drivers to test pilots who flew prototype jets with a high risk of a fatality. F1 has a great foundation and only a few real legends still around

My favorite quote attributed to Sir Stirling ….
When asked how he managed to stay so active and vibrant in his advancing years …
“Well, I don’t smoke and I don’t drink much …. and two out of three isn’t bad.”

Regarding forum question:
1. Definitely should have won: Bahrain, Canada
2. Could have won (50-50): Austria, Baku, Germany
However, their car seems to have a peculiar characteristic: Very fast in qualifying, not so much in races, but the best top speed. Hence, even the 2 wins Ferrari has have been very hard-fought.

Not that peculiar, inherent lack of downforce means tyres slide more and wear more so race pace suffers. Mercedes had this problem for years til James Allison came on board.

”I think he’s only lost it once which was in Singapore when he went into one of the Williams, Sirotkin.”
– Not only the misjudgment in Singapore twelve months ago but also several incidents in his first three seasons in F1 (2011-13) back when he used to be a bit like Pastor Maldonado, although he calmed down a lot and pretty much got rid of that side after his single season at Mclaren except for the last season’s Singapore GP and the 2014 Canadian GP.
I agree with the COTD. The current T20 would become a bit more realistic overtaking spot if it were approached straight from T14.

Perez isn’t an idiot, he knows he is just as likely to land a “top seat” as his team mate is, so better to secure yourself in the next best thing (a solid mid-field car that can snatch a podium and has financial security) for as long as possible.
This is nothing to do with him expecting them to suddenly become “best of the rest”.
