In the round-up: Oliver Bearman was up to speed from his third lap in an F1 car, according to Ferrari.

In brief

Bearman “up to speed” from third F1 lap

Ferrari’s head of track engineering, Matteo Togninalli, says that Oliver Bearman was immediately quick from the first time he drove a Formula 1 car at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track late last year.

“One thing that surprised me straight away the first day in Fiorano in October of ’23. He went out for the first time in his life with a Formula 1 car and like the third lap that he did at Fiorano – a new track, new car, new situation – he was already up to speed. So that is talent,” Togninalli said.

“He was a guy, 18 years old and you would never expect that straight away he was up to speed. The other aspect to me that is paying off quite a bit is he is very calm, he’s very focused, he’s not panicking. So I think he has a great future. I hope he can achieve whatever he wants in life and I’m sure he can.”

Not being on grid “frustrating” – Lawson

Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson admits it is “frustrating at time” for him not to be on the Formula 1 grid.

Lawson replaced the injured Daniel Ricciardo at the team now known as RB for five rounds in the second half of 2023, scoring two points with ninth place in the Singapore Grand Prix. He is acting as reserve driver this season.

“I always imagined what it would be like to be in Formula 1 and now I know what it’s like because I’ve driven it, so maybe it makes it harder,” Lawson said at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

“Obviously I want to be in that full time, so I’m working towards that. But I think just knowing how rare the opportunity is, knowing how big it is, obviously maybe it’s frustrating at times, but I guess I have to remind myself of that.”

Sette Camara disqualified

ERT driver Sergio Sette Camara was disqualified from the final results of the weekend’s Sao Paulo Eprix after stewards determined he had exceeded his maximum energy allowance during the race.

Sette Camara finished 16th, less than half a second ahead of ERT team mate Dan Ticktum. However, he exceeded his total energy allowance of 38.5 kWh for the race, resulting in his disqualification. Ticktum, Norman Nato and Robin Frijns all moved up one position in the final results.

  1. Well, at the current rate, Lawson could get a chance relatively soon.

Both sides have their responsibility in the chequered flag incident.
However, I’d consider it still more a race engineer error for not telling the final lap was ongoing, & even more so for not informing shortly after passing the chequered flag but nearly lap.

For me, Suzuka also goes among the top ones & if anything, I prefer it over Spa-Francorchamps & Silverstone (& the other ones ranked above by them, for that matter) despite not being as fast.

  2. The hagiography of Bearman continues. His management must be chuffed

    1. Ahah, was thinking the same, that’s why I came here to check the comments!

    2. New British driver, new chance to hype. British media must love it.

  3. The hype around Bearman reminds me of Vandoorne who scored podium on F1 debut with a difficult Mclaren car but never really got a shot at a full season drive.

    1. i meant points not podium

    2. @pinakghosh when you say that he “never really got a shot at a full season drive” – isn’t that exactly what he had in 2017 and 2018?

      1. I should have added in a competitive car in F1 like Mercedes where he was the reserve driver for a while.

  4. If I were Max Verstappen, I’d be shaking in my boots just at the sight of Bearman. I never thought the world would see a man even more glorious and perfect than Kim Jong Un. What a time to be alive.

    1. Worst of it is that he doesn’t even do it himself. Just another press thing. Hype somebody up. If he lives up to it you’re an expert, if he doesn’t you have some more great stories to kick him in the dirt again.

  5. Finishing 20 seconds behind Leclerc is impressive given the circumstances, but it’s not exactly the same as ‘being up to speed’. There’s still a lot to learn for Bearman, and while he can be proud of his mature drive in Saudi Arabia, he’ll need to show more to get himself a full time seat. He certainly seems like he has promise though, and he’s pretty close already. If he can keep this up in the F2 season he’ll certainly be on some teams’ list.

Try actually reading what is written in the body instead of going by headline next time. Matteo Togninalli was specifically talking about the Fiorano test last year.

  6. I think the excessive hype around Bearman is not due to his performance, but due to the lack of any other positive F1 news.

Thank you, mr V. for showing us again what an utter bunch of amateurs the FiA actually are.

    1. Yeah, that was an impressively silly place to wave the flag.

How do you exceed your energy allocation in Formula E.

Leave it up to the FiA: They’ll find fault with drivers having consumed a too high percentage of their drinking bottle, if it suits them.
