Very sad to hear of another fatality in sports car racing just a week after Allan Simonsen lost his life at Le Mans:

Blancpain race weekend, round 3, Paul Ricard (FR)

It is with great sadness that Blancpain and SRO Motorsports Group confirm the tragic death of Andrea Mamé when his #11 Lamborghini was involved in a multiple collision at the start of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race this morning.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, who were immediately in attendance, his injuries proved fatal. The driver’s next of kin have been informed.

The two Lamborghinis #24 and #125 of Blancpain Racing driven by Marc A. Hayek, Peter Kox, Albert von Thurn und Taxis, Stefan Rosina and Jos Menten will not participate in the Blancpain Endurance Series race this afternoon.

Marc A. Hayek, President and CEO of Blancpain and Stephane Ratel, Founder and CEO of SRO Motorsports Group and their teams, all wish to express their condolences to Andrea’s family and many friends at this very difficult time.

Thoughts with his family and friends. Rest in peace.

Read this before the race on the Audi sport Facebook. Think this influenced my worries for injuries at the GP today.

RIP. Shocking news, especially coming after Simonsen’s death last week.

Maybe it’s time someone should be looking at how those GT cars are built as some reglementations regarding what materials are used and how those materials successfully absorb impact force could be welcome.

Two further statements from the organisers:

Following the tragic events that resulted in a fatal accident for Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo driver Andrea Mamé this morning, Automobili Lamborghini confirmed that it would be cancelling all of its racing activities at Paul Ricard in his memory.

Accordingly, the second Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race has been cancelled with the unanimous support of Andrea’s fellow competitors. Additionally, the two Lamborghini GT3’s #24 and #125 of Blancpain Racing driven by Marc A. Hayek, Peter Kox, Albert von Thurn und Taxis, Stefan Rosina and Jos Menten will not participate in the Blancpain Endurance Series race this afternoon.

The four other drivers who received medical attention following the accident were Andrea Solimè, car #10, Vaclav Petch, car #77, Tomas Kral, car #88 and Dario Cerati, car #33.

Vaclav Petch, Tomas Kral and Dario Cerati were released from the medical centre after precautionary checks.

Andrea Solimè was airlifted to the Hopital Sainte Musse in Toulon where he is conscious and talking, with no fractures or visible injuries, but his condition will continue to be monitored by doctors for the rest of the day.

Andrea Mamé was a passionate, competitive and immensely popular driver who had been a mainstay of Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo racing for the past two seasons. Automobili Lamborghini’s immediate priority is to support Andrea’s family at this difficult time.

An update concerning Andrea Solimè’s condition will be issued in due course.

Following his accident in this morning’s Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race at the Paul Ricard circuit, Autocarrozzeria Imperiale driver Andrea Solimè was airlifted to the Sainte Musse Hospital in Toulon to be attended by doctors for a number of injuries.

Andrea is conscious and according to the doctors treating him, his overall condition is satisfactory and he will remain under observation for the time being.
