Sebastian Vettel took up his usual place at the top of the times in final practice for his home race. The Red Bull driver beat Fernando Alonso by two-tenths of a second in a late flurry of laps as the track dried out at the end of the hour’s running.

Red Bull and Ferrari look very closely matched after the second practice session at the Hockenheimring – Sebastian Vettel described the red cars as “extremely competitive”. Fernando Alonso topped a largely dry second practice session at the Hockenheimring, setting a best lap of 1’16.265 in his Ferrari. Second fastest was Sebstian Vettel and their team mates were third and fourth fastest.

There’s little that can be read into this morning’s wet practice session at the Hockenheimring. If nothing else, the session gave us a chance to see how the different drivers copes with the challenging conditions and what kind of choices they would face in a rain-hit qualifying or race.

Adrian Sutil set the fastest time in a rain-hit first practice session at the Hockenheimring. But McLaren’s hopes of gaining more useful information about their exhaust-blown diffuser were dashed when Lewis Hamilton crashed having done just eight laps.

Michael Schumacher says he intends to keep racing next year and intends to compete for a record-extending eighth championship title.
