Race day dawned very wet. Romain Grosjean binned his car on a reconnaissance lap, putting him out of the grand prix before it had even started.
Max Verstappen drove with tremendous verve in the rain. He began by passing Kimi Raikkonen and before the day was over he’d added Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and his own team mate to the list of scalps he’d claimed.
The conditions worsened rapidly. Raikkonen’s race ended when his car snapped out of control on the straight.
The track conditions were borderline almost all race long.
It was an emotional farewell to his home crowd for Felipe Massa after crashing out of his last race in Brazil.
Valtteri Bottas gambled on intermediate tyres but it didn’t pay off. Fernando Alonso, who spun before the final restart, beat him to the last points place.
