Had a really fun race, unexpectedly. Haven’t touched F1 2013 for 3 weeks, and apart from 5 practice laps 30 mins before race start, went in cold. But somehow I can always find a good rhythm at Monaco unlike some tracks. Qualifying went pretty well considering i did my lap without putting Rich Fuel on, and on primes that were 3 laps old. Got 4th.

My start wasn’t great, dropped to 5th/6th through Turn 1, I forget now. Then, into Nouvelle Chicane on the first lap, I tried a dive bomb on JF but couldn’t stop in time so missed corner. So I let him past on the way to Tabac, but i don’t think he knew i was doing this for a while so hesitated haha. In the meantime, I passed a car or two that had spun at the chicane.

After that, there were a few incidents behind me, so I had no real pressure on. This was perfect, as I could just run my own race. I was a couple of tenths slower than JF ahead of me. There really wasn’t much to report in the middle stages of the race apart from the fact that I gradually dropped back to about 7s behind JF, and kept gaining on the battling group behind me as they presumably kept having incidents. Since I started on primes, I decided to do two stints on options at the end, so I pitted on lap 10/23/31.

In the 3rd stint, JF had some problems and I started to catch him. I held back because I thought he may have to pit again, and instead would try and undercut. When I did pit on Lap 31, I unfortunately came out 0.5 s behind bradley. Obviously on new options i was much faster, and got past into Mirabeau on the next lap. On my screen I braked so much later that I was completely along side at apex, so didn’t think it was an inappopriate move. But this delay did cost me time.

The next few laps I plodded along trying to improve my PB, and then with a few laps left I could see that I was really closing in on 3rd, as their tyres were presumably dying. With 4 laps left it was 15 seconds, 3 it was 12 and then with 2 left only 6. Coming into the last lap, I caught Bob, and passed him on exit of St. Devote with superior traction. I was still 2.5/3 behind JF, but caught him through the lap. On the exit of Rascasse, couldn’t resist a lunge, but he turned in (fair enough) and I was squeezed into the wall and had to settle for 3rd. Maybe I should have waited for the run to the line, but adrenaline got the better of me.

All in all it was a pleasant surprise to be back on the podium! Well done to Damon for dominant win!

Having only really played this game for this particular championship, I don’t really get a long with this game at all. Couldn’t keep heat in the tires, crashed into invisible and visible walls, and generally tried to keep out of the way as I was being lapped.

Feels a bit hollow scoring 4 points for basically just turning up, but it’s not really surprising.

    Maybe Singapore will be better.

Well, it was too hot and my laptop overheated after the race which meant it automatically switched off and I lost the entirety of my game capture footage. Luckily, I recorded the start with my camera as backup, but I missed all the fun stuff. Really gutted with that! Monaco is probably my favourite race to make a video for and my idea for this year’s is going to have to wait another year. :-(

Qualifying really was ridiculous for me. I decided that I’d be happy with anything in the 1:10s for a chance at pole but realistically felt that under the pressure on the day I’d likely only get into the low ’11s. On my first lap I locked up into the Nouvelle Chicane and cut the corner so I pitted for fresh tyres. On my second attempt at a lap I locked up into Sainte Devote and ended up in the barrier, but I completed my lap just in case. For my third and final run, I put enough fuel in for two last flying laps. On the first of these, I can’t remember exactly what happened but I gave up on the lap somewhere and decided to focus on the final one. As I crossed the line to begin my proper lap I noticed I’d managed provisional pole somehow but wasn’t happy to call such a dodgy lap my “pole lap”. At the first split of the final lap I was around 1.5 seconds up and pleased with how it was going until I ran into @Slr at Tabac who was also on a lap. I didn’t expect him to let me by and I didn’t want to spoil his lap by lunging at him so I just tried to stay as close as possible to get DRS and a nice tow across the line. But I ran out of fuel coming into La Rascasse and ended up losing a few seconds which meant I kind of accidentally took pole with a messy lap by the skin of my teeth (0.012 I think it was)! Extremely lucky.

Made a decent start (somehow) and saw @JamieFranklinF1 getting turned into the outside wall at turn 1. Then nothing happened for ages and I basically tried to stay focused despite being extremely uncomfortable in the heat.

With about 5 laps to go, I arrived on the back of @Bradley13 and tried to go up his inside into Nouvelle but he shut the door. I tried again in the same place on the next lap but used KERS whilst ducking back to his right as we exited the tunnel. As I drew ahead, his front right clipped my left rear and I was sent pirouetting out of the tunnel and down to the Nouvelle Chicane at top speed. Unfortunately, my tyres were destroyed after this but Bradley’s must have been in a similar state as every time we crashed into each other I caught him a few corners later. I tried two more moves into the Nouvelle Chicane, but I changed my approach and tried to outbrake him on the inside. On both occasions, I locked up massively and careered through the run-off with smoke going everywhere. I tried one final move on his right coming out of the tunnel on the final lap but he mustn’t have seen me and I was squeezed into the wall. With my tyres finished, I squirmed out of the final corner under his rear wing but lost all traction (felt helpless as I smashed through the gearbox in a vain attempt to tame the rear) and decided to cross the line facing backwards.

Our battle was a lot of fun but only because I knew I could afford it. I think in the future we probably shouldn’t race each other if we’re on different laps in case it prevents someone from winning or someone from catching the leader. Ultimately, it has the potential to change a result and I’m not sure that’s what we really want happening.

I was very impressed with our crash out of the tunnel though! It was almost identical to the one I had with @Alfie last season and once again at close to 300km/h. Bonus points for nearly launching it into the harbour this time, however.

Here’s some highlights from the opening stint:

@commanmonsoon – I now am terribly terribly disappointed that didn’t record, as I’d have loved to have seen all of that, because in fact I saw none! :(

My Qualifying was solid but not mighty, I kept making mistakes in sector’s 2 & 3 and had to settle for 3rd behind Damon & Jamie.

Got a clean start and watched Jamie & Damon getting too close into turn 1. I could tell they were going to collide so stuck it well up the inside (only just keeping two wheels on track) to avoid any collision. It worked and I came out in the lead ahead of slr & supernicebob. That didn’t last long however as I got rammed into the Nouvelle chicane by slr who braked considerably later than I did. As I was already starting to turn this spun me round into the wall. I had to reverse out in front of everybody and luckily I ghosted. I continued on in about 5th/6th only to have another incident with someone later and drop to 10th. From then on it was fighting my way back through the field. I made a quite brilliant move on Mag out of the Nouvelle Chicane. I got a better exit and used all my KERS to draw alongside and take the inside line around Tabac. I also made up two positions driving through iamsa8 and electrolite who had collided exiting Casino. At some point I hit a phantom wall, breaking my front wing and spinning me 720 degree’s very very quickly. I overtook through iamsa8 (having followed him for too many laps!) at the final corner and along the start finish straight – not quite sure why he ghosted there though! Also got pushed into a wall at Mirrabeau by ed who squeezed through the inside and accidentally bumped me wide. I picked up a time penalty at some point and so tried to keep the gap over 10 seconds to Electro behind – not knowing he had one as well! At some point with about 8 laps to go I think I unlapped myself from a rather slow Damon – who I presumed was taking it easy! Then just drove until the flag trying to keep my gap over Electro. I noticed as we started the final lap Damon had re-caught me but quickly did calculations that is I stayed ahead I would beat Electro no matter how slow my final lap was as I’d have a 39th lap and he wouldn’t. Spent the 38th lap desperately trying to keep speed up so Damon wouldn’t get remotely close and just managed it to cross the line ahead of the winner <-- claim to fame right there! ;) So yeah, as you can see Damon, I only knew you were behind me for a lap! Not quite sure what happened there! :P Although the battle we had sounds immense fun from your screen, I just wish I’d been involved! Haha I also apologise if my evil ghost LAG twin caused you any issues ;)

I do have a video which I’ll hopefully upload in the week, but it’s really only good at showing 2 or 3 moments! Generally I was extremely sluggish today and suffering from understeer all the way through. I didn’t practice enough to nail a good setup, and I should be very pleased with 6th. Singapore, on the other hand, should be a different story.

Most entertaining moment – coming into Casino Square to find @aus_steve facing literally 180 degrees backwards, and, with no time to react, hit him square on.

    Oh man, what a race…

Qualy – My first flying lap turned out to be my fastest. I was 0.5s on the first lap of my second run, but made a complete hash of the last sector. I initially thought that my second lap of that run (0.2 up) was disallowed when a corner cutting message came up at Tabac, but reviewing the video it was a delayed message from the chicane so no complaints there.

Race – made a good start to get ahead of Ed, and then received a nudge from behind putting me alongside Jamie, and we had a bit of a tussle up the hill. The path ahead cleared at the chicane, and somehow I was in 2nd. I assumed this wouldn’t last long, but somehow my pace was just about good enough to keep me there. Jamie was catching though, and wasn’t far off when I made my first stop. With hindsight I should have gone 1 lap further.

I rejoined just behind Electrolite, who was either struggling with tyres or very kindly offered little resistance. When Jamie made his stop, we were side by side up the hill! I deployed KERS to get ahead, but for the rest of that stint he was not far behind and maintaining constant pressure, whilst also wisely saving some fuel. My tyres came to the end of their life, but I thought I’d stay out and see how long I could keep Jamie behind me. Not too long when I out-braked myself at Mirabeau.

When Jamie made his second stop, he came out about 4s behind me I think, and the gap did briefly grow, but inevitably began to shrink. With a few laps to go my tyres were completely gone and I was powerless to stop Jamie, and then Ed getting by me. So close, yet so far, to that elusive first podium in the Collantine Cup.

Can’t complain too much as I’m pretty happy with how this season is going. I don’t think I’m going much quicker than I have been previously, I just seem to be making significantly fewer mistakes. Traditionally, Singapore has been an awful track for me so that will be the real test. #BelieveInMcLaren

Exactly how different will the story be in Singapore, Electrolite?

Poor Shyguy! You’ve got some pretty impressive pace and it keeps getting wasted.

Supernicebob on the podium is pretty much the only thing I want in my life right now. Why couldn’t Ed have been at the cricket again?

Haha Damon, lucky i only go to the SCG matches not the ones at ANZ!

@supernicebob It was a mixture of both of the above, in addition to being a bit crap.

@electrolite – The depressing thing is even if Jamie dropped a score and none of the rest of us did, he’d still be ahead…
