In the round-up: Romain Grosjean says the hyper-soft tyres degraded so quickly in practice it was as if he was driving on wet weather tyres.

What they say
Grosjean also said he was surprised the hyper-softs didn’t offer more performance:
I think it was raining at one point! It was very, very difficult. Over one qualy lap it’s always a decent tyre. Whenever you want to do a long run you do a couple of laps, three laps and then it’s like driving on wets.
I didn’t gain as much as I was expecting from my first run on super[-soft] going into hyper-soft. I didn’t quite find the lap time I was hoping for. There’s some more work to be done there.

History will record that this is the era of @lewishamilton, #Vettel is just 'the other bloke’, you know… thingamy. You know… not the guy who stepped on the moon but the guy who was there … somewhere. Lewis doesn’t have to win fifth title to prove that to anyone, surely? #f1

Comment of the day
The injuries Robert Wickens sustained in his IndyCar crash two months ago have sadly turned out to be more serious than we all hoped.
I feel awful for him. Can’t believe just how positive he’s been about the whole situation. Always has a smile and its clearly not a fake for the camera smile.
A lesser man would be completely broken by this (aka me!).
Robert, Billy and Alex are absolute inspirations. (Sorry to others that I’ve not name checked, but these three are specific heroes to me).

I’ll bet that on the one weekend where being conversative with your tyre strategy would have paid off, McLaren have decided to abandon their conservative tyre choices, and go aggressive.

Looking to get the gambling money, heh?
Stay classy F1.
If you can’t keep making money by paddling one addiction, by no means refrain from another, even worse addiction probably.
Maybe they can partner with weapons manufacturers aka war lobbyists, and say it’s for raising awareness about committing horrors of war responsibly.

Biggsy, could be even more addictive for Liberty, because they haven’t announced a plan to share the winnings from this sponsorship gamble with the teams.

Maybe they should drill some cooling holes in the PU ;)

@hohum: True enough. At least McLaren has a proven high drag design that works as (in)efficiently in thin air as in the calorie-rich thick stuff.

Grosjean’s words are interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of the top-runners were to attempt to get through Q2 with the middle-compound (super-soft this time) again although doing so can at times have downsides such as not getting off the line quickly enough to hold a position as was the case last time out at COTA.
– Byron Young’s tweet is interesting as well.

Of course the ‘middle soft’ is the Ultra this weekend.
But it seems that only the Red Bulls can guarantee a Q3 spot on those.
We might get an exciting battle for 11th.

That tweet from Byron Young is pretty dismissive and rude. Like I’m sure it’s not terribly difficult to elevate your heroes without putting others down, isn’t it?
