Interestingly mixed-up starting order.

weird qualifying, 4/10 of the cars in Q3 had ‘back of the grid’ penalties. hopefully makes for an interesting race tomorrow at least.

Given they usually have pretty decent pace in the races, this is a good starting position for both Aston Martin cars.
Verstappen could win from 15th given the dominance of the Red Bull in his hands. Pérez underperformed not taking pole, but the fact Verstappen couldn’t even be bothered to provide a tow for him speaks volumes about the dynamics within the Red Bull team.

depends on almost certain carnage in the race and sc/vsc timings due to the tracks length being in the right place at the right time to get a ‘free’ stop is massive and would decide the race winner regardless of Max’s pace.
Team strategies will make a huge difference on Sunday

All bets are off with that many eager back markers hustling through the mid field.
How many VSC’s?
How many real SC’s?
A Poll should be on this forum!

I disagree. With a 2s advantage, he’d have sliced through the field into p3 really quickly even in last year’s cars. This year, I can see him being in p3 by lap 10, not far behind the top two. I don’t think he’s going to have any trouble winning with such a massive advantage and Ferrari’s obsession with screwing their drivers over…

Alonso was so lucky to get ahead of both Mercedes. Even his second attempts didn’t give him the edge over Ocon. I don’t expect Alonso to be higher than eighth or ninth in the race with that pace.
As for Mercedes – even though they are very slow in qualifying, they might have a chance to win this race. Might, because Verstappen will do it, unless he crashes.

Good to see Ferrari getting their tyre strategy worked out before the race :))

Warning, Mercedes is in good position for first win tomorrow, Ferrari and Red Bull 2nd drivers should beware!

The pace advantage the ORBR has Verstappen will be in P1 by lap 20.

Part of that will be the front runners putting early to undercut each other.
Perez will pit ridiculously early on lap 6 and fall to the back of the field. Ferrari will blindly follow them with Sainz and still manage to lose the place. Meanwhile Verstappen will calmly pass slower cars, despite being on a harder compound than the drivers around him and will manage to pit and come out just behind Perez. Perez will leap out of his way and in the process lose a place to Sainz. Sainz and Perez will end up pitting an extra time having to fight past the Alpines and McLarens and will end up finishing behind the Mercedes drivers. Leclerc will look on for a podium finish but his new engine will blow up with 5 laps to go.

So Ric outqualifies Norris? Seems like it, not the grid position but their best lap times! Oops!
David (@nvherman)
27th August 2022, 22:23
@Spachamp that’s because Riccardo’s time is from Q2, and Norris’ time is from Q3. In Q2, Norris set a faster time. Hence why he was in Q3 in the first place
@HoHum (@hohum)

Yes, it’s very peculiar that there were many times set in Q2 that were better than the same drivers could achieve in Q3 despite no mention of rain or red/yellow flags, track temperature seems to be the only variable. I still hate these narrow operating range tyres.
juan fanger (@juan-fanger)
28th August 2022, 3:24
@hohum Some of the drivers, including Norris and should have included Leclerc (Ferrari idioti), did their Q3 runs on used tyres keeping fresh sets of softs for the race, so they went slower in Q3 than Q2.

Thanks for the info @juan-fanger, risky business, tyres still too influential for me.
