It’s a shame Stroll and (to a much lower extent) Piastri couldn’t pick things up to move McLaren and Aston much closer to Mercedes and Ferrari.

As for Max and RBR – might as well be a different formula.

I don’t now whats better for the sport, the same season again next year or a season much closer. A close season will mask all f1s problems.

Having said that I can’t imagine how next season will be close at the front especially over the course of the season. I suppose the only possibility is the effect if the development penalty but it hasn’t seemed to slowed them during its year. Anything is possible but other than the small chance of the penalty there’s every reason to assume next season will be the same

      1. FIA need to extend the wind tunnel limitations to pencils and paper to stop Newey. I heard they are going to make a change to their concept again so another x years for others to catch up.

  2. Even Perez would have won WDC with more than 50 points gap. Thanks to a rocketship, developed with exceeding the budget cap.

Actually he would have won it with a further gap, partially due to max disappearing from the result but also that if he were the clear best driver even more of an effort would be cushioned around him to improve the performance.

    2. Pérez would have crumbled even more under the pressure of Hamilton on his heels in a much slower car.

I don’t see any evidence their budget cap foul made a difference this season.

      1. People need excuses. It was the car… It was the budget cap… It was… (whatever but the obvious)

    3. Classic

  3. It’d be interesting to analyse Alonso’s latest races and what could’ve happened if not his mistakes. I have a strong feeling that he could’ve single-handedly dragged Aston Martin higher than McLaren. And they should hire at least Hulk instead of Stroll. Top 3 or even the second place would be theirs in the WCC this year.

The race was terrible, as usual. Alonso was angry because the car is terrible. So slow in the straight, and Aston couldn’t fix the issue during this very long season. Next year, getting into top 10 will be a miracle for them.

Idiotic penalty for Perez. Verstappen did absolutely the same stuff to Russell a week ago and Russell got the penalty. Alonso, leave ASAP, I want to stop watching this sshow.

Only rules changes brought Ferrari and then redbull close to mercedes, same against redbull the years before.

  5. Maybe I should leave this for the Facts & Stats post but Max already got the record ‘points/race entered’ from the BigLiar. Is is now 13.98 vs 13.97, of course this is one of the silliest records, with the constant change in punctuation systems. My guess is that JM Fangio would be first no matter what choice in punctuation system. provided it was constant for all of F1 history. But I have not checked it seriously.

Getting ahead in the (much more meaningful) score for wins/race started is on the cards for a few races into 2024, if the scenery does not change too much (first from Schuey, then from the BL), but the absolute record is far far away.

  6. After the first two races I decided to skip this season, only watching Spa, Suzuka and Interlagos (plus about half of Spain for some reason). First year skipped in over a decade. Kept up with the results though. I guess I’ll give it another try next year.

Anyway, I have watched many uncompetitive F1 seasons but unwilling to do so currently given the size of the calendar and that many of those races are on bad tracks. I guess Liberty Media known whether their approach is paying off. If they lose me as a fan they might gain two others, so best of luck to those new fans and Liberty Media.

    1. Sam I was in a similar mood during the grooved tire error. I refused to watch the grooved tire races, so went about my life. But now I am back, thinking they have decent tires. But maybe these “design to degrade tires” is forcing the dominance seen in the red bull? Find a car that treats tires really well and one will dominate the season, not to say Max that may be the best driver every.

      Rule of unintended consequences:
Make design to degrade tires to keep racing close, and one driver, and one team, find the secret sauce.

    2. Then you sadly missed the drivers introductions in Miami and Las Vegas. I don’t know what else you want to bring you back to the fold. Leclerc even did a football field helmet in an act of desperation in Austin and you didn’t even tune in.

I afraid that if the racing stays this way F1 will introduce even more cringeworthy stunts to get people to watch. Ive watched every race since I was 13 except when I was in college and didn’t have a tv. But they don’t want fans like me.

  7. Remarkable 3rd and 4th from old boys

    1. Yup, the top three were pretty much sealed but I’m glad that Fred kept fourth, even if the AM was a textbook case of arrested development. Fred was mostly relentless during the championship but had a couple of weekends off in the late season, though.

  8. I find it hard to believe that Red Bull junior finished behind Williams whilst Red Bull senior finished 451 points ahead of Mercedes. Surely some of AT’s budget is diverted to RB. Look at the other rival teams that use the same power units and how close they are in performance.
