Having won his fourth consecutive world championship, losing fastest lap to Kimi Raikkonen probably mattered little to Sebastian Vettel.

Raikkonen took it on the final lap having been forced to pit as his tyres had worn out. As the graph below shows his lap times had begun to rise with about 12 laps to go.

His lap 56 run-in with his team mate cost Romain Grosjean two-and-a-half seconds, which goes a long way towards explaining why Raikkonen’s team were so frustrated with their driver.

  1. ….giving Rocky the best quote of the year so far

      1. I don’t remember the exact words, something like:
“Don’t even think about the fastest lap, Kimi is going to obliterate it”

        1. I think it was on the final turn of the race, Rocky said:
“Oh, and just so you know, Kimi pitted for fresh tires, he’s going to obliterate your time”.
It surely was because Vet didn’t listen to them and went for the fastest lap earlier when they were all dying because of mark’s failure.

        2. Nah… I loved Seb’s radio in Malaysia:

Seb: Mark is too slow, get him outta the way, he’s too slow.
I love watching the video of this radio a lot. LIKE A BOSS!!!

          1. Funny, i’d rate that one as the worst of the year, or at least pretty high on that list ^_^

          2. “Kimi pitted on the last lap, he’s on a new set of option tyres, and he’s going to obliterate your fastest lap.

        3. During the race, while Vettel was setting the fastest lap, Rocky told him: “Don’t think about it, other drivers will be fitting options late, we have enough problems already.” After the race, he said: “We’ll talk about this one later. Raikkonen has just fitted options and will obliterate your lap.”

Although to be fair, Raikkonen only beat it by half a second and that’s with him being on very low fuel and on relatively new option tyres (albeit maybe engine tuned down because of too low fuel) whereas Vettel had engine turned down and no KERS to protect alternator, on old primes.

        4. Thanks Hyoko, and others as well. I couldn’t watch it, bad timing in my country.

  2. This is an interesting chart, because it shows just how much Vettel has in hand when he goes flat out (near the end to get fastest lap, and lap 1), while at other times he is managing the gap and looking after the tyres. Rosberg and Sutil did well after breaking in the tyres gently (5 laps soft, 9 laps medium) and then having time to use the pace left later in the run.
