2013 Indian Grand Prix

Kimi Raikkonen’s angry exchange with Lotus was one of the defining moments of the Indian Grand Prix, but there was plenty more of interest being said on the team radios.

While Lotus had problems getting one of their drivers to move over for the other, Force India seemed to have more success.

An unhappy Giedo van der Garde blamed Max Chilton for his first-lap retirement. And even after taking the chequered flag having climbed through the field to finish third despite an engine problem, Romain Grosjean was still annoyed about Esteban Gutierrez’s defensive driving over 30 laps earlier.

And of course the chequered flag falling was the signal for Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull to begin the celebrations of their fourth consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ championship titles.

Here’s how the Indian Grand Prix unfolded in the team radio messages that were broadcast during the race.

2013 Indian Grand Prix team radio transcript

Lap* From To Message
PR Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean You are going to the grid now and KERS mode stays where you are.
PR Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu OK going to the grid, raido check.
PR Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Yep, radio’s all good.
PR Bernadette Collins Jenson Button Front wing OK?
PR Jenson Button Bernadette Collins Roger, all OK.
PR Bernadette Collins Jenson Button Box this lap.
PR Jenson Button Bernadette Collins No burn-outs, five second hold and then launch at the end.
PR Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso We drive in charge plus five and we pull down after ten.
PR Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso Chage zero, that was OK, cool down the car.
PR Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg 20 minutes to go.
PR Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado Remember the start, RS mode at 14 5 [14,500 rpm], remember to use some KERS.
PR Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado Clutch in, 14 5. Slowly in the pit lane.
PR Pastor Maldonado Andrew Murdoch Clutch eight
PR Francesco Nenci Esteban Gutierrez 15 minutes to go.
PR ? Ayao Komatsu Ayao start multimap one, clutch six. We can stay where we are, if you want to run eight, stay in eight, otherwise six.
PR Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Ten minutes to go.
PR Ayao Komatsu ? Also tell me if you have any feeling on Romain’s procedures, that would be good.
PR ? Ayao Komatsu Ayao procedures were OK.
PR Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel This time when we drop the car on the ground with the engin running we need two static bite points and then cycle KERS, seven-eight-seven.
PR Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen The radio is very poor out here as usual. So I’ll get Julian to copy any feedback. But can we go to clutch seven and multimap one to start, please. We’d like you to use 50% of the KERS at the start and then no more on the lap, so you should have 50% for the race start. And we will need the pit lane speed limiter on.
PR Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Traction metrics for the race: 1,000 will be our target. So you can judge your pace by that. Be more prevalent on [medium] running because we’ve really got to make that one last. Finally obviously sector two, turn ten, that’s where we’ll do the majority of the tyre saving. So turn ten, eleven, that’s where the most energy goes in so when you do the tyre saving, obviously all the overtaking’s done in sector one.
PR Simon Rennie Mark Webber And Michael said the level of grip on the grid is similar to what you felt on the second start at the end of the pit lane. Obviously we had a little bit of clutch slip there and a bit of wheelspin. But later in first gear, that was the level of grip we should get. And just remember on the first lap, remember which are the important cars. So Alonso and the McLarens are the most important cars.
PR Lewis Hamilton ? What engine braking did I use the other day. Can you confirm – torque two?
PR ? Lewis Hamilton Affirm Lewis, that’s the engine braking you used the other day.
PR Lewis Hamilton ? At the launches at the end of the pit lane there was a lot of rubber down there, where we were starting all the time. So the last one kind of bogged down a bit.
PR ? Lewis Hamilton Affirm Lewis, I can see that, thanks.
FL Francesco Nenci ? So procedure for the [distorted]
FL ? Francesco Nenci 15 seconds.
FL Francesco Nenci ? Copy.
FL Tony Ross Nico Rosberg We want as much lift and coast straight away into turn three. All gears are learnt.
FL Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Gearbox sync when you can. We need sync in gear seven. And 20% KERS.
FL Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Gearbox is good and engine is on target so remember no part-throttle.
FL Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado It’ll be clutch seven, 14 5.
FL Pastor Maldonado Andrew Murdoch Copy.
FL Phil Charles Jean-Eric Vergne Warm front tyres a little, Jev.
FL Phil Charles Jean-Eric Vergne Recovery three.
FL Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Remember to stay in first until the car has stopped and be careful with that left clutch paddle position.
FL Simon Rennie Mark Webber KERS eight, brake balance one click forwards. This is a red start. Remember react to the beep quickly, use KERS in gear two and consistent procedure, do your normal procedure.
1 Kimi Raikkonen Mark Slade Can you check if my tyre is OK I got hit by Webber.
1 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Looks OK at the moment Kimi.
1 Tim Wright Charles Pic How is your front wing Charles? Is you front wing OK? Please confirm.
1 Charles Pic Tim Wright Yes front wing OK. Somebody touched me at the rear.
2 Giedo van der Garde Juan Pablo Ramirez My suspension is broken. Again Chilton, again Chilton, what an idiot.
3 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Box. Torque map one and box. White line, watch your speed, hit your marks.
3 Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado DRS enabled.
3 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach Tyres OK so far.
3 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Copy Nico. Recovery seven, brake bal plus three.
3 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg It’s important to get past Massa, rear temperatures though are 17.
4 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton All tyres are hot especially the rear. If we can push the brake balance forward a small amount, that may help.
4 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen The rear calipers are very hot, you’ll need to move the brake balance forwards.
6 Fernando Alonso Andrea Stella I think I damaged something more in the car. The steering is very heavy on the right corners.
6 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso OK we will have a look at that.
6 Gary Gannon Max Chilton We see the problem and we see it getting worse. It’s your call if you can manage it. The brake pedal is going long, we’ll keep monitoring, your call if you think you can’t drive with it.
6 Max Chilton Gary Gannon I just put the brake bias to the rear.
6 Gary Gannon Max Chilton Understood.
6 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Vettel stuck in traffic, having to pass cars.
6 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel The leaders’ pace is 32.7 at the front.
6 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso OK for sure we touched the wheel as well so there may be something strange on the wheel. But for the moment we see the car OK so let’s see what we can do.
7 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta Paul if you can we recommend KERS one or KERS two for the final turn if you need it.
7 Phil Charles Jean-Eric Vergne You’re two tenths quicker than Daniel. Fernando still coming quickly behind you, he’s 32.6. And Button behind you now, Fernando and Button behind you.
8 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Box this lap.
8 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach Balance is understeering at the moment.
8 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Copy Nico, so protect the fronts, we keep you up to date on pace.
8 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach This is the same problem Hulkenberg mentioend during qualifying.
I think we also have problems with the DDS again. The downshifts don’t feel smooth in the low-speed.
8 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Copy that, we’re on it.
8 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Torque two, diff entry five. You’ve come out in front of Hulkenberg who pitted from [soft] to [medium]. The cars in front of you are on used [medium] tyres. You will need to get past them but just looking after those temperatures.
8 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Press the reverse button once.
9 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Think about brake balance one click rearwards for turn 16 only.
9 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Fastest car on track at the moment: 32.4, fastest on [mediums].
9 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa You are three seconds, 2.6 seconds behind Vettel. So no problem.
10 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Recovery for braking stability low, on the toggle.
10 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach Copy. Thankyou.
10 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Temperatures are 16 rear, left-front good, right-front on limit.
10 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Remember you’re not racing the leaders any more. Be more concerned with the long run.
10 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Do you want any more flap change, apart from what we’ve already discussed on the grid?
10 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu No.
11 Mark Temple Sergio Perez This pace and tyre management is really good, let’s keep this up.
11 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Brake balance one click forwards.
11 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Rear temperatures are stable, temperatures OK for now. Would like you to start closing the gap up to Massa.
11 Brad Joyce Adrian Sutil How’s the balance Adrian, and how are the tyres going?
11 Adrian Sutil Brad Joyce Yeah it’s going well, it’s holding up consistently.
11 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Do what you can to protect the tyres sector two for two laps.
12 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Should have the DRS the next lap. One light available for out of the next corner.
12 Fernando Alonso Andrea Stella In Italian.
Hanno rotto sempre le [distorted] (They always broke the [distorted])
12 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean As per the plan we go for one half-turn down. Clutch seven.
13 Jenson Button Dave Robson Box this lap.
13 Dave Robson Jenson Button Launch map on, first gear before you stop and fire the brakes. This is the [medium].
13 Dave Robson Jenson Button Launch map off and it’s a clear track.
14 Mark Temple Sergio Perez We are gapping the cars that have pitted onto the [medium] at around four or five tenths a lap so we’re building a good gap, let’s keep going.
14 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel There’s only one car between you and Mark, you’re minus six Perez, minus 13 Webber.
14 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Use maximum two lights exit last corner. Remember so don’t save too many.
15 Fernando Alonso Andrea Stella In Italian.
Il gruppo dei leader che sono davanti a noi che non si sono fermati, chi sono? (Between the group of leaders that is in front us, who did not stop yet?)
15 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso Webber, Perez leading, you are the fastest on the track, I will update.
16 Sergio Perez Mark Temple Are we still in Plan A?
16 Mark Temple Sergio Perez Yes at the moment we’re still on Plan A. We’ll keep an eye on the situation.
16 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Would you like a flap adjust at the top?
16 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross Down .5… .4.
16 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Copy.
16 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso There is a drive-through penalty for Gutierrez. He may end up close to us, he’s now sixth and he’s holding up Felipe who is now seventh.
16 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Last lap 1,000 on traction metrics. Tyre temps all look good, below target by ten degrees.
16 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel There’s traffic ahead of Perez, Pic, he should get blues.
17 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta Sutil last lap 32.0, that’s three tenths in sector one. It’s entry/exit turn one and apex speed turn three.
17 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Some good laps up to Sutil now, 3.2 seconds in front of you.
18 Mark Temple Sergio Perez Car behind is Vettel. We are not racing him so we don’t want to lose any time to him. Keep looking after your tyres and doing the pace you’re doing, you’re doing really good job.
18 Dave Robson Jenson Button We are effectively racing Alonso and his last lap: 31.9.
18 Paul Davison Jules Bianchi Pic did 34.4 last lap, 34.4 is the target.
18 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton This is good work, traction at 550, you were four-tenths faster than Nico last lap.
19 Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado Good tyre management, let’s just keep it like this.
19 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Default map 20.
19 Paul Davison Jules Bianchi Van der Garde is out of the race. So Pic is in blue flags at the moment, we’re still looking at 15 laps this stint.
19 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Release ten if you need to.
19 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Four-tenths faster than Nico last lap.
20 Tim Wright Charles Pic Blue flag, Alonso with Gutierrez.
20 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton You are target plus one. Current lap 20.
20 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel KERS map 12.
21 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg We think these tyres have very little degradation on them. We think also Massa is slow, Perez is half a second a lap quicker than Massa so if you can get past Massa do so but don’t destroy the tyres.
21 Mark Webber Simon Rennie How are we going, mate?
21 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Engine 24.
21 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach I said I think we both went too far with the set-up, mechanical balance etc… The rear is too loose.
22 Mark Temple Sergio Perez Don’t worry about being overtaken by Vettel. What you’re doing is really good and we are building gaps to the cars that pitted on the [soft], we are in a very good position.
22 Sergio Perez Mark Temple OK, OK, OK.
22 Dave Robson Jenson Button Default X20.
22 Kimi Raikkonen Mark Slade At the pit stop one turn up on the front wing.
22 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Confirming up one turn on the front wing.
22 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Recovery eight, brake balance minus three.
23 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Press the ED button and let’s push on and get close to Sutil, see if we can pass him.
23 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Traction at 575, three-tenths faster than Nico last lap.
24 Kimi Raikkonen Mark Slade We need to start cooling the car on the straights where possible.
24 Francesco Nenci Esteban Gutierrez Gutierrez is under pressure from Grosjean.
Remember Lotus, they are the one with the hard limiter, and your pace is very good when you have free air, so keep pushing Esteban.
24 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Release nine, back to ten on the line
24 Paul Davison Jules Bianchi We have Perez then should have at least four laps’ clear air.
24 Gary Gannon Max Chilton Recovery three.
25 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach That was not an advantage on the straight. He was forcing me off.
25 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Copy.
25 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Press the ED button.
25 Brad Joyce Adrian Sutil How’s the car going, Adrian?
25 Adrian Sutil Brad Joyce Yeah feeling good. Tyres are lasting very well.
26 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Recovery seven, brake balance plus three.
26 Tim Wright Charles Pic Button behind is five seconds, it’s five seconds behind before you get blue flags, he’s three seconds a lap quicker.
26 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Safety Car window is open. You pulled away two-tenths on that lap.
27 Gary Gannon Max Chilton Blue flag, Webber.
27 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Harvest mode five.
28 Kimi Raikkonen Mark Slade My tyres are in very good shape so I think we just try to stick to the plan. Because I cannot get past people, I cannot get close enough, I lose the brakes.
28 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen OK Kimi we understand.
29 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu Grosjean complains about Gutierrez’s defending. But the stewards were happy with it.
That’s not fair, come on, [distorted].
29 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean OK, we are talking about it now.
29 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Brake balance two clicks rearwards. Bravo, bravo.
29 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Your pace is very good, Sebastian. Every lap at this pace is good for us. Default 15.
30 Felipe Massa Rob Smedley [Distorted] there’s something at the front.
30 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Yes, OK, understood. Rosberg should be already in front I think. There will be 31 laps to go at the end, if you stop at the end of this lap. It’s up to you, how do the tyres feel now? They still feel good? Is there a chance you can get to the end?
30 Felipe Massa Rob Smedley Yeah, I can go quicker.
30 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa The only chance we’ve got now to get in front of Rosberg is to pass Sutil and then go quicker.
31 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Box, torque map one and box.
31 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso Start map on, box now.
31 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg You jumped Massa, there are 30 laps remaining, Bottas is the next car in front, he has not stopped yet.
32 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Both Massa and Hamilton will go to the end so you’re racing now.
32 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Watch your speed and white line. Reset torque map.
32 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Diff five.
32 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Try brake balance rearwards at turns one and three for understeer. Bottas has pitted so you have clear air.
32 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta You’ll be racing Bottas. Use overtake mode if you need to. Slow stop for Bottas. Racing him. OK, we’ve got him. Now, qualifying las to the end of the race, Paul.
33 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Diff two, brake balance two clicks rearwards. You’ll be close to Perez on [soft] and Ricciardo at pit exit.
33 Marco Matassa Daniel Ricciardo Flap switch for next set. We are on strategy A.
33 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean All tyre pressures and temperatures looking good so keep looking after these tyres.
33 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu I don’t understand the [distorted]
34 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Just keep pushing for one more lap and then we’ll get you to back off. You’ll be racing Perez, he’s in the box now.
34 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Sebastian you need your tyres for the whole stint, not now.
34 Francesco Nenci Esteban Gutierrez Push Esteban you’re much quicker than Bottas and Di Resta, keep pushing.
35 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Ricciardo ahead on the [soft] tyre, he has one more stop to make.
36 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Vettel is plus 12. The next car behind we are racing is 20 seconds behind you. Tyres will be OK to the end but we can’t go crazy.
36 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Mix three.
36 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg We need to keep pushing for the moment, we are fighting Kimi. Keep pushing and we can ease off later.
36 Nico Hulkenberg Marco Schupbach No reply broadcast.
Can I use special two?
36 Phil Charles Jean-Eric Vergne Daniel is braking earlier for turn five and carrying more speed in and through the corner. We must be quicker, Jev, we just are not quick enough at the moment, we must pick up the pace.
37 Tim Wright Charles Pic You have blue flag and then multifunction one, fail sensor two.
37 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Sutil has a stop to make to go to [softs]. Your threat is Rosberg who has completed his stops.
38 Tim Wright Charles Pic We’re investigating a serious issue on the car so we’re retiring.
38 Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado We need mix position three.
38 Paul Davison Jules Bianchi Max is 18 seconds again, he has to stop again and he has lots of blue flags.
38 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu Repeat that?
38 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean] No KERS release out of turn four.
38 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu OK.
39 Brad Joyce Adrian Sutil We need to push harder now.
39 Marco Matassa Daniel Ricciardo Use 50% KERS out of turn three.
39 Simon Rennie Mark Webber You need to use 80 KERS before the last corner every lap.
40 Mark Webber Simon Rennie Webber’s race comes to an end.
What’s happened?
40 Simon Rennie Mark Webber We are losing gearbox sync. We have lost gearbox sync.
40 Simon Rennie Mark Webber We need to stop the car. I’m very sorry, we need to stop the car, mate.
40 Mark Webber Simon Rennie Did you say stop the car?
40 Simon Rennie Mark Webber Correct, stop the car please, stop the car. Pull over in a safe place.
40 Simon Rennie Mark Webber It’s an alternator, mate.
41 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Sebastian, Mark has had a failure. Mark is stopped on track.
41 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin I’m aware.
41 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Focus on track limits, OK.
41 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Mix three.
42 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel The last stint the rears were quite worn. Need to be aware of that. Stay on top of the rears, the rears are close.
42 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Mix 14 into turn four.
42 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton That’s a good lap so you’re about a tenth quicker than Hamilton on that lap. Push up to Grosjean now.
43 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta That’s actually just a better pace relative to Bottas as well, Paul, because he was closing. Adrian needs to go to the end on his soft tyres.
43 Paul di Resta GianPiero Lambiase Blue flags.
43 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta OK.
44 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton Parts of this message were played out of sequence.
18 laps remaining. Race situation: You are currently P6. Raikkonen […] and harvest mode five. Race situation you are […] Grosjean P4 made one stop.
44 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Try using second gear in turn three we believe it helps traction, reduces tyre temperatures.
44 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta Sutil came out of the pits just in front of Di Resta and was told to let him through.
Use the overtake button. Adrian will be given the message.
44 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa While it’s quiet I will tell you 16 laps to go at the end of this lap.
45 Andrew Murdoch Pastor Maldonado We’re racing Alonso ahead to the end.
45 Pastor Maldonado Andrew Murdoch Copy that.
45 Nico Rosberg Tony Ross What position is Kimi?
45 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Kimi is P2, you are P3.
46 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel The usual: focus on braking and clean exits. Constant rhythm is what we need.
46 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg 15 laps remaining, fastest lap of the race, gap to Kimi is 6.8.
47 Mark Temple Sergio Perez Raikkonen is P2 but still has to stop, if we keep this pace up he will come out behind us.
47 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel 14 laps to go.
48 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa 15 laps to go. I will wait around about five laps and then we can start to attack Grosjean.
48 Mark Slade Kimi Raikkonen Need to try and save fuel if you can without losing too much pace.
48 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg 14 laps remaining. Gap to Kimi 6.1 you were 0.7 of a second a lap quicker so you will catch him at the end of the race.
48 Francesco Nenci Esteban Gutierrez Box now. Front wing for [soft]?
48 Esteban Gutierrez Francesco Nenci Plus two.
48 Francesco Nenci Esteban Gutierrez Copy, plus two. Clutch nine.
49 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Gap to Grosjean is only ten seconds. If he tris to get through without and has to stop we might be there at the end.
49 Brad Joyce Adrian Sutil You’ve Ricciardo and Alonso catching.
50 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Your pace is good. Just need to keep it tidy.
50 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg We’re confident these tyres will last. You’re doing a really good job there. Gap 4.3 seconds. Try second gear in turn three.
50 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean KERS mode seven
50 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg Release six.
51 Mark Temple Sergio Perez Hamilton and Massa in front’s tyres are three laps older than ours. Grosjean in front of them his tyres are 20 laps older than ours, he may struggle at the end, could be a chance for positions.
51 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa I’ll talk to you in the corners because it’s too noisy on the straights. P5 Kimi in second position stopped when we did in the first stop. He’s doing 30.0′s so about half a second slower, he’s been told to save fuel as well. I think he’ll probably try and go to the end like Grosjean. KERS recharge one click up.
52 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Ten laps to go.
52 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Avoid turn 15/16 boost to get full boost on back straight.
52 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Stop using the drinks bottle please. Traffic ahead Vergne, and ahead of him Bianchi.
53 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Rosberg is now P2. Still +28 Rosberg.
53 Andrea Stella Fernando Alonso In Italian, referring to KERS deployment.
OK, adesso abbiamo usato?? dobbiamo targettare 60, 60 prima della 15. Adesso abbiamo usato 80. (OK, so now we used?? we need to target 60, 60 before 15. Last time we used 80)
53 Francesco Nenci Esteban Gutierrez Recovery eight, release seven.
54 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Eight laps to go, by the way.
54 Paul Davison Jules Bianchi Blue flag, Vettel. Once Vettel is past we need to push hard. The gap to Max is 22 seconds.
54 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa Kimi two seconds a lap slower now. You’re about ten seconds behind so should catch him in about five laps.
54 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg Tyre temperatures looking a little low on the rear so just look after those rears now. Seven laps remaining, Kimi’s not a threat.
55 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Some cars have fitted [softs]. Don’t even think about it. We’ve got enough problems as it is, OK?
55 Marco Schupbach Nico Hulkenberg The brake went or something. I think it’s the floor, it’s the skids or something.
55 Peter Bonnington Lewis Hamilton We’ve got six laps remaining. Temps still look good though.
56 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg It’s brought the temperatures up, Nico, a little bit, so we’re happy with that. Grosjean is about to overtake Raikkonen.
56 Lewis Hamilton Peter Bonnington My rear tyres are gone.
57 Romain Grosjean Ayao Komatsu Grosjean caught Raikkonen at over two seconds per lap but Raikkonen forced him wide at turn four as Grosjean tried to overtake.
Come on, guys!
57 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean OK we are telling Kimi.
58 Alan Permane Kimi Raikkonen Censored by FOM.
Kimi get out of the ******* way.
58 Kimi Raikkonen Alan Permane Don’t shout, **** when I have a chance but not in the middle of the fast corners.
58 Tony Ross Nico Rosberg If you go forward on the brake balance just caution front locking turn 16 it’s the left-front that’s more worn.
59 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Lotus had concerns about Grosjean’s engine late in the race.
You are doing an excellent job, you need to short-shift as much as you can.
59 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Short-shift everywhere, we need very short-shift.
59 Rob Smedley Felipe Massa KERS magnettino position plus one. It’s more power. Three laps to go.
59 Kimi Raikkonen Mark Slade These tyres are in quite bad shape. But I think it will last a lap.
59 GianPiero Lambiase Paul di Resta Looks like he may well exit ahead but keep pushing. Racing Kimi.
60 Ayao Komatsu Romain Grosjean Short-shift at 14.
60 Jenson Button Dave Robson Just missed a gear, went into a false neutral.
60 Dave Robson Jenson Button Understand, box this lap please.

  1. In the transcript it says it was Mark Slade who told Kimi to move out the way, but I thought, as reported in the Media, it was Alan Permane. Was it Alan or has he received the brunt of the criticism?

    1. @f1ian Indeed it was – have amended it.

  2. Mark Slade: Kimi Raikkonen Censored by FOM.
Kimi get out of the ******* way.
58 Kimi Raikkonen : Mark Slade Don’t shout, **** when I have a chance but not in the middle of the fast corners.
I thought that was Alan Permane :)

  3. Thanks Keith…

  4. Good job Seb, we’ll talk about this afterwards.
Just so you know Raikkonen pitted on the last lap. He’s now on brand new tyres and he’s going to obliterate your lap.

What an anticlimactic radio message! Fantastic – highlight of the radio transactions for me, not Slade and Räikkönen’s spat!

    1. I thought the same thing, a party pooper comment ;) “You’re a quadruple world champion, but you failed to get the fastest lap”. But I guess that Seb likes to be told about those things.

      1. I thought the point of that was chastising him for going for FLAP despite the team’s concerns about possible failures (as Seb always does). I agree though, what a moment to do it!

  5. 41 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Sebastian, Mark has had a failure. Mark is stopped on track.
41 Sebastian Vettel Guillaume Rocquelin I’m aware.

I remember this being broadcasted on the very same lap Webber retired, how was Seb aware of that? Did he observe it on the video walls around the track like sometimes in the past?

    1. Probably saw it on one of the screens.

    2. I thought it was more like “Copy that” instead of “I already know”.

    3. Maybe he did

  6. That “dont use drinks bottle” is a code – comeone, why would you have to say that to driver?

    1. It’s code for “dont use the drink bottle”. Mark retired with alternator issues (electrical). The drink bottle uses an electrical pump to deliver the Red Bull to the driver. ie, electrical power. They didnt want Seb to tax the electrical system any more than absolutely necessary. I think Seb said after the race he was told not to use KERS either at some stage after Mark’s retirement.

      1. “The drink bottle uses an electrical pump to deliver the Red Bull to the driver”

I think you typed that wrongly. It’d be pretty funny if they were actually drinking Red Bull, through their helmet straws, during a race =D

  7. Romain needs to learn to pass without any external help. Complaining on the radio is not how you win a race, or anything.

    1. Stop having a go. It is legitimate

    2. Romain needs to learn to pass

You mean the same ‘Romain’ who started seventeenth and finished third in the last race, gaining more places than any other driver have in every race so far this year?

    3. Sometimes I wonder if people have even seen the race before they post on here

  8. Not wishing to start or rekindle conspiracy theories but I notice that at no stage of the race was Webber told that Vettel was doing faster laps and closing in on him, had he known this maybe he could have picked up the pace a little and had a better chance to fight for the win, not that it would have helped a DNF.

    1. @hohum This is only what was broadcasted, not every single conversation between drivers and teams.

    2. +1 What TheBass said

Not wishing to start or rekindle conspiracy theories

Yet you’re trying way too hard. You really think Webber and his race engineer weren’t doing their best at that stage, assuming his pace was good enough?

      1. In these days of tyre management, driving to a delta etc. information as to who is catching you is valuable, ask Lewis or just read the messages sent to other drivers. I accept that the Bass may have the right explanation, but wonder, given the interest in the RBR strategy duel and given that Webber was ahead of Vettel, why those messages were not thought interesting enough for release. @shena

  9. Romain sure loves crying on the radio to get people out of the way.

  10. forgive me for my ignorance…
how can alonso speak Italian fluently … does he know the language from the beginning
    or
if you know Spanish its easy to speak Italian

    1. The latter.

      1. Both, actually. He learnt italian long before joining Ferrari, and it’s quite similar to spanish. My guess is, if you put some interest, you can speak fluent italian in two years if you are a spanish speaker.

@andrei Massa is fluent in italian as well. He doesn’t speak it with his race engineer because Smedley’s native language is english, whereas Stella’s italian.

    2. @anky12 It’s not that easy anyway. I guess Alonso put some effort in that. As an example, Massa (being a romance language native speaker also) doesn’t speak in Italian with his race engineer.

  11. “Without this bloody Gutierrez everything would have been easy.”

Nice going, Romain. Talking like a real champ.

  12. What does this comment to Gutierrez mean on lap 24 “Remember Lotus, they are the one with the hard limiter”?

  13. This Gutierrez guy…doesn´t he know his job is to make everybody else´s race easier and to move out of the freaking way? Who does he think he is? Romain, we got your back.
