Valtteri Bottas set the fastest lap on his way to victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Vettel was also in the hunt for fastest lap and did his quickest tour of the circuit on the last lap of the race. He was a tenth of a second shy of the time Bottas did three laps earlier.
Fernando Alonso’s radio messages revealed he was also entertaining thoughts of trying to set the fastest lap of the race. However in the final race for the McLaren-Honda partnership he ended up over a second off the pace.

I was expecting the official lap record to get beaten as it’s from 2009 like Spa’s previous one as well. I guess I just took it too much for granted that just because they managed to beat a lap record set in 2009 there, they’d automatically do it on this circuit as well. Also, the winners’ overall race time was just 11 seconds off the lowest of this circuit so far (from the inaugural 2009 race as well), so, i.e., the most recent edition is the 2nd shortest Abu Dhabi GP so far.

I wonder how much hamiltons undercut bid was hurt by the local yellow that came out just as bottas stopped. The chart shows a slight blip in the next lap but hard to know how much time he had in s2 over Bottas. Hamilton could close the gap at will so I was surpprised he didn’t jump Bottas.
