What they say

Grosjean asked his team on the radio if he could retire in the latter stages of the race when he was running outside the points, but the team told him to stay out.

It was just a hard feeling. Obviously those engines have got to do a lot of races so I just asked do you want to save the engine a little bit for future races. We’re always limited in mileage in free practice so if we can save some, great. But I guess it was the right call to finish the race.

Comment of the day

Are Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel right to blame tyres for the out-lap incidents we’ve seen in qualifying this year?

Was the issue really the tyres or was it that no one wanted to be at the front and not get a tow on the straights.

  1. Grosjean knows he is out of HAAS for 2020. So, he has no motivation. A telling sign that Magnussen will stay and Grosjean will depart was the little one-on-one conversation Gene Haas was having with MAG on the grid, just before the race at Spa.

Au revoir, Grosjean. Try Indy. They seem to have an apetite for discard former F1 drivers.

    1. Hamilton asked the very same thing in Germany. By your logic, he’s about to retire too.

    2. Grosjean said he will not go to Indy due to ovals.

    3. @svianna isn’t KMag already officially confirmed?

      1. @m-bagattini Reportedly, yes.

      2. He’s not confirmed per se, he’s under contract for another season.

  2. Who would be motivated to drive that dog of a car anyway.
They are sitting ducks day in, day out. They are lucky Williams is so bad, Gene Haas may very well pull the plug if they’re dead last next year.

  3. Tragedy struck this weekend, I guess everyone wants to do something nice and struggles to find a balance and many were shook by the accident, on the other hand I feel like you ought to keep some reservation, I think from my perspective watching sky they said too much about it, they didn’t just paid respect they went too far too soon to focus on racing and defending the sport and passing judgement. It’s clear that motorsport is dangerous and all drivers are instructed on the risk, to be aware of the risk comes with accidents such as this but regardless just pay respect, focus on the racer, leave it there, not on yourself. Sky was in a difficult position, they just needed to keep it at the back of their heads and not gasp and stutter every 5 mins and reflecting on racing in general as if the boy is guilty of getting himself killed.

  4. I was very annoyed at the start. Max’s move was stupid and it’s the second time he’s tried to outbrake the world in turn 1 at spa. You cannot get your car in there, the gap naturally disappears. He did the same on Vettel and Kimi a couple of years ago.

Specially yesterday having lost time with a bad start, he should know better, you cannot recover it all in turn 1, lap 1. He got his race finished, ruined Kimi’s, and affected others too. Not clever.

    1. @fer-no65 Since I cheer for Max’ driving style, I accept that he is too aggressive from time to time. But it would be nice if he took at least some of the blame for once.

      1. @matthijs you think of all the top drivers, early in their career, they never admit fault. Did Schumacher ever admit fault, did Hamilton, did Vettel. No. That’s why they became World Champions. The arrogant single mindedness that they are never wrong.

        1. Fair observation. No doubt whatsoever total confidence. Kimi was wrong etc.

Max has plenty of that, but also driver skill. There are plenty Arrogant single minded non-world champions.

This year he was driving beautifully on almost all races, now there are some chinks in his armor. But it is not like he makes mistakes every second race. That would be alarming.

      2. When Verstappen was interviewed on the English-language broadcast he seemed to acknowledge that it was a dumb move, so I think he’s maturing a bit in that regard, which is nice to see.

    2. @fer-no65 I agree. The failed overtaking-attempt into La Source was not only stupid but desperate as well. A desperate attempt to make up for a yet another unideal getaway. He should’ve been a bit more patient given the long full-throttle section just after La Source and the significance of the tow-effect towards Les Combes.

    3. To be honest that spot is great for overtaking a lot of places just look behind Max Lando Norris made 7 positions from the same spot in the corner.
Kimi thought Max wasn’t there as he saw him getting away slowly and was watching Bottas in front of him bracking and went short bracking to the right. (Kimi words not mine) Then you know an accident is going to happen.

Max was poorly away but he can react very fast with those gears and he made a lot of meters back on the rest too bad Kimi thought he had room to the right evade Bottas.

      1. React quickly and make a lot of meters, or neglect having to brake for the traffic like everyone else?

    4. Why would Kimi go about as if no one was there? It is L1, T1? He went from left to right with a whole lot of space to his left. He did the same in 2016 when Vettel squeezed him into Verstappen.

      1. Becuase he has to turn? That corner is very tight, max would’ve naturally drifted very wide on exit with that narrow entry angle. He needed the whole field to brake for him in order to go round the corner. It’s radious is probably even sharper than the F1 cars turning circle

      2. Even Kimi can only adjust to what he can see.

    5. Yes, but remember that he is the best and most deserving driver to ever sit behind the wheel of anything and with the best fans backing him. (The only race fans ever in history to cheer loudly the moment a rival crashes. Why doesn’t anybody address that disgusting behavior?)

  5. Regarding the COTD: The simple solution is to go out earlier rather than leave everything tight with the time left.

    1. @jerejj absolutely true. They calculate the optimum time, without considering that there are 9 other cars going out at that same exact time, including their own other car.

    2. Going out on an empty track loses the driver up half a second in tow advantage, I expect the same games to happen at Monza.

  6. It always amazes me when people critic drivers standard in the junior formulas. What do you think they are their doing? Learning, and especially after this weekend events, Jake Hughes, you should have just shut up instead of making these kids feel even worse than they are now. Just for a pathetic tweet

    1. @johnmilk I completely agree with you. I think that’s poor form.

    2. What did you expect? He’s a 25 years-old in F3, almost a decade older than some of his class rivals, with 8 years of single-seater experience and enough longevity on this level for it to have had three different names during this time. And yet, his results are nowhere near representative for his age and experience. So, how can he elevate himself by saying the others suck? Exactly, he can call them immature.

But anyway, this tweet is just the zillionth example for why the Round-up should do away with the Social Media Posts By People Who Kind Of Suck™ section.

  7. Yeah, Max, you’re wrong. The gap was there, but you could have known Kimi would not expect you there. Take your humble pie, you made an error of judgement. Perhaps focus on the continuous bad starts and not on who was to blame for the collision. The first serious blot on his season.

    1. The bad start wasn’t due to the car this time. He said in an interview (dutch tv) that his initial reaction wasn’t great and then he got wheel spin (i.e. he panicked and floored the throttle too early). This is as close as it get’s for Max to admitting he messed up himself.

As for the move on Kimi, I think he put himself in a 50-50 situation on L1, T1 because he was trying to make up for his bad start. Kimi should have seen him perhaps, but if you are Max that’s never a smart bet imho.

Grosjean wants to retire from Belgian GP, meanwhile the fans want Grosjean to retire alltogether

    (Just kidding, no offence intended)

    1. You’re not wrong.

I’m ready for him to retire myself. Grosjean just can’t stay motivated at a high level. Sometimes he acts like a world champion driver and other times a day driver. I’ve never been able fathom why his form has been so up and down over the years. I was initially happy that he went to Haas but over the years that has faced a lot. Kmag has his issues but being aggressive and going for it is not lacking. Rogro has been so apathetic his career is dying with a whimper. Also Kmag would do well in Indy not Rogro. I would like to see Hulk to go Haas, I believe that he would be a better measure of the car than Rogro. Glad that the hurricane didn’t hit before Spa race, now it’s time to board up!
