The excitement of Max retiring lifted this from a boring to a mediocre race – 5/10.
What we learned is that taking RB out of the context doesn’t make F1 that much more interesting and that F1 races have become too short. Less than 90 minutes shouldn’t happen. Get rid of the 300 km rule and make it a 2 hour minimum instead.

Why?
So what if some races are 90 minutes or less? Others end up been longer & others shorter, That makes things more interesting than if it was time rather than lap limited.
Going back a bit in it’s final season Champcar moved from lap count to time & it hurt the races in terms of how strategy worked/played out which is why it was one of the elements that the merged Indycar series didn’t carry over despite picking up other parts of Champcar’s regulations (P2P & using both compounds of tyre for instance).
Timed races work better for endurance series than are several hours long but I think the 300km/2hr distance we have for Grand Prix racing works perfectly fine & isn’t something that needs altering.

I think verstappen retiring actually was damaging to this race, you saw sainz overtook him and perez was doing worse than usual? I feel like red bull wasn’t a rocketship here.

Hard to rate as on one hand we had a different winner & one with a nice story behind it after Carlos missed the last race after the appendix surgery.
But on the other it was one dominant winning driver replaced by another & with the exception of some overly easy DRS highway passing there wasn’t really a great deal of action behind. Alonso/Russell was a fun fight at the end before George binned it & Tsunoda’s mega divebomb proper overtake from nowhere was probably the best part of the race.

Bit of a sleepy race, it was 5 am though. But the season’s properly under way, great to see a load of real fans in the sunshine at a proper track. Nicely controlled by the poster boy for laparoscopy, and a flashback to Pastor Maldonado there at the end.

Which is why I think Melbourne should always be the season opener as a packed house of dedicated, passionate fans at a circuit that isn’t in the middle of a desert creates a far better atmosphere that helps create a lot of extra buzz & excitement around the start of the season.
Bahrain isn’t a bad track & it can produce good racing but there’s just no atmosphere to the place so starting the season there always just makes it fall a bit flat.
Same when ending in Abu Dhabi, Just lacks that fun end of season party atmosphere you got at Adelaide, Suzuka & Interlagos.

These cars can’t go soon enough.
They are awful for racing.
Max is not the issue. The issue is that nothing happens at these races anymore. Again the top 10 has barely any clashes and overtakes. Drivers spend the whole race close to others but never close enough to attempt a move.
Only Perez did something but he was out of position fighting much slower cars. Once he cleared them all, you could turn it off, wouldnt miss a thing.

decent race, great results.
Lewis starting on softs was a bad call, but watching Merc pit Russell to keep him in front of Lewis, you had to know that Mercedes was only going to finish in the doldrums. They seem more interested in beating Lewis than getting results at this rate. so sad.

Meh. Apart from the three retirements, not much happened. Just take a look at the field spread on lap 20 or so, and everyone was having a nice Sunday drive with more than two second gaps to front and back.
Surprise winner usually makes for a good race, but not this time.

Really decent race. Some lovely driving from Sainz, beautiful move to take that spot from Max at the first opportunity. Good racing from the likes of Alonso, Magnussen, who got rewarded for his really solid race with a point too.
Shame Norris did not quite have the pace to get onto Leclerc.
I remain unconvinced by Russels race craft. He crashed with Bottas years back, while many blamed Bottas then, we’ve seen several lapses like today, we saw it in Singapore last time out too. Good that he came off with just his pride destroyed and car in shatters today though.

True about russell, but let’s not forget what happened in both cases: he has a good position and they give it up on a risky, let’s say losing strategy, putting pressure on him.
So also not impressed by merc strategy, I was immediately dubious when he pitted, both races.

I’m not sure. I expected more excitement when Max was out. Wondered if Ferrari was making a mistake with team orders, but Sainz did have the pace to stay ahead of the McLarens. Wondered how long it would take Perez to catch the McLarens, but then he didn’t. Wondered what was happening between Alonso and Russell while the race director was showing the McLarens and Piastri cruise around. Wondered what was happening as the gap between Albon and Ricciardo shrunk by seconds and then increased by seconds.
Hmm… I was impressed with the clean start. I don’t mind watching gaps and trying to work out the pit strategies. There was a lot of holding position and cars in the right place at the start (or soon after) remaining there. I wonder if Red Bull’s setup issue was to try and counter an expected problem with race pace? If this is the case, the most exciting thing about the race is whether it’s a prelude to… something else. If the Ferrari was just better here what other races can we expect Red Bull to be on the back foot for? I haven’t heard Perez’ thoughts yet, but his lack of fight doesn’t seem surprising given the odd decision of Red Bull to go for a less than optimal setup in anticipation of a problem. He had been running reasonably well this weekend so I don’t think cries of “Perez is rubbish” are necessarily accurate. It might have been more exciting to have Max on the track to see where he would finish. Perhaps he would have struggled anyway? Passed for the lead and then try to stay ahead of Leclerc? Lewis was vocal about his problems this weekend, but he often seems more dynamic in the race. Too bad he was out, too.
Not sure what the data can show about Alonso. Looked like he was a good distance ahead of George when he was slow on the apex, so it’s rather optimistic to crow about brake testing. George may have a lot to learn about chasing a driver for position, even in a slightly better car. He needs to sort himself out as I’m sure Mercedes is evaluating whether his new team mate will be the number two or number one. Alonso made that mistake in qualifying, but the strategy, drive and a little fortune meant that he landed on his feet. A bit like a cat, but less like Lewis has a knack for a feline recovery. Alonso doesn’t have to compete with Lewis for the Mercedes spot, though. Is a Mercedes move a slightly sideward one for him? Aston Martin has a few races to keep their man. The upgrades had better be good.

I know. I thought the gap between them decreased from over four seconds to very little in a short time and then increased back to this. That hardly happened when Ricciardo was lapped. Not sure about this, though.

I guess now we know if F1 would be boring if Max wasn’t there. But it’s the nature of this track, it’s hardly ever been a particularly good race, bit of a procession every time. Lead was never under threat, nor was P2, nor was P3, or P4. Perez not picking up the pace at all didn’t help either. Aside from the scrap at the end there’s nothing really of note happening in the entire race outside of the two champions retiring. I’d honestly give it a 2/10 at best.

Although I thought the race was ‘alright’, it seems I am still on the lower end of the bell curve in terms of actual rating.
I usually have a bit of a whinge at the ones (and to a lesser extent the twos) in what often seems a protest vote, but in this instance I can only assume that votes were bolstered by Max not winning. However, this was not only tempered – in my opinion – by the fact that it was not a racing loss by Max, but regardless, even if Max had lost on track, it hardly constitutes a great race (unless of course Max lost on track due to some notable overtakes). I honestly can’t understand what makes this more than a middling race and would love to know what I missed.

Finally a race on a real racing track – no silly annoying “track limits” nonsense, but drivers getting in real trouble for going out of track.
That being said, it was a most typical dull F1 race.

I awoke at 4:15am totally not planned and thought I would catch the race…
Hmm Max out, this could be interesting…. Ferrari radio ” Hold positions ” makes sense I suppose but thats the race for 1st out the window.
Norris and Piastri swap positions…makes sense I suppose, different tyre life and strategies…..

The reality is that this was another fairly dull F1 race, yet I’m sure it will be rated much higher than the first two this season, just because of Vestappen’s retirement early on. Don’t get me wrong, I do actually like Sainz, more so than most of the other drivers, and it was impressive for him to win given the circumstances, but it was still quite an uneventful race with nothing really to keep an eye on as it was unfolding (e.g. no converging strategies that was bringing anyone close to one another except for Russell/Alonso perhaps).

Yes, I voted 5, which is still high compared to the other 2, but I see some people went even higher, lots of 6 and 7.
This particular race could’ve been more interesting with verstappen in, considering red bull was weaker here.

Haas, RB-Honda RBPT, Williams is what a landfill is to a construction site. Andretti is refused to come in but the “carbage” is allowed to drag themself around various tracks and make races more than boring.

Rated the race at 7/10
It was an interesting opening lap, and it would have been interesting to see if Ferrari could keep up with Max and Red Bull had there not been any issue. Among other interesting things were pit stop errors from Sauber, the lack of pace from Williams, the weekend long gap between Tsunoda and Ricciardo and the backward going Mercedes.

I enjoyed it. By comparison to the first two races this seemed much more exciting. Of course Max going out early helped. There was at least a battle between two fairly evenly matched teams.
On the subject of drivers I think Merc would be absolutely mad not to offer Carlos a drive next year.

Different winner, but the race ability of these cars is truly awful. 4/10 for me.
I wonder though, is it really as bad as it seems or is the TV coverage worse than ever – they never seem to pick up on the interesting stuff, we always see it too late or on replays and I’m sure it used to be better.

6/10 for me.
Didn’t like it that Max went out due to mechanical failure, but that is racing. Disappointed that it didn’t become a race for top positions with Max out and Sergio having damage that stopped his progression. Lewis out didn’t help either. And also in the midfield there was no real tension going on.
On the plus side good to see Yuki beating Danny again, George racing good, but then his crash (penalty hars, but Alonso was most to blame for it in my view).
Still enough for a six. So much better than a weekend with no F1.
