Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel waged war with each other over the team radios as well as on the track during the British Grand Prix.
The pair traded blows over a dozen laps around Silverstone, while simultaneously complaining about their rivals’ driving standards. Alonso was first warned about abusing track limits as early as lap ten, then following a complaint from Jenson Button the Ferrari driver was shown the black-and-white flag on lap 27.
Vettel reported Alonso for leaving the track so many times he sounded increasingly bored by it towards the end of their fight. But he became much more animated when he claimed Alonso was not leaving him enough room during their wheel-to-wheel scraps.
Alonso, meanwhile, was livid when Vettel finally got past him on the run into Copse. He said Vettel had only been able to make the move stick because he had run wide, and demanded Vettel be ordered to hand the place back or receive a five-second penalty.
The decisive moment in the outcome for the battle for victory came when Nico Rosberg retired from the lead on lap 29. His radio messages reveal that before the problem proved terminal his overriding concern was to avoid failing to finish entirely, and find a way of getting the car to the finish to collect some points.

PR | Jenson Button | Bernadette Collins | Drinks are OK. |
PR | Mark Temple | Kevin Magnussen | And Kevin, would you like a front-wing change? |
PR | Kevin Magnussen | Mark Temple | No, stay as we are. Stay as we are. |
PR | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Please check the right-rear brake. There’s a lot of smoke coming out of it, there must’ve been a small fire. |
PR | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, around to the grid please. Around to the grid. |
PR | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | Yep. Understood. |
PR | Bernadette Collins | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, that’s good. The guys will meet you at the back of the grid. |
PR | Jenson Button | Dave Robson | OK, stay at the back of the grid. |
PR | David Lloyd | Kimi Raikkonen | OK, I remind you, box, box. If you can get some temperature in the tyres, that would be good. Bottas is around ten seconds behind. |
PR | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | Cool engine. Standard up-shift. Cool engine, standard up-shift and on to grid. |
PR | Adrian Sutil | Marco Schupbach | OK. |
PR | Francesco Nenci | Jules Bianchi | OK Jules, go to grid. Go to grid. And clutch nine, please Jules. Clutch nine and we push you into position. |
PR | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | Fifteen minutes. Fifteen to go. |
PR | Craig Gardiner | Esteban Gutierrez | Switch off all cooling fans for the national anthem. |
PR | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | OK, so just confirm. Pit limiter on, should be in mode 12. RS mode lower RS only. Blend four. Torque one and pre-select blend. |
PR | Simon Rennie | Unknown | So to confirm, go clutch seven from the dummy grid. His procedure was good. |
PR | “Rich” | Nico Rosberg | And radio check, Nico. This is Rich. |
PR | Nico Rosberg | “Rich” | Radio loud and clear. Much better than Tony. |
PR | “Rich” | Nico Rosberg | Why, thank you! |
PR | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | And main thing on the lap to grid – temperature, as I say, in the front brakes. And just do everything you can to keep temperatures in the brakes and the front tyres. |
PR | Pastor Maldonado | Mark Slade | Maldonado having difficulty with his dashboard display. One thing – the light on the screen is very poor. I can’t see the numbers. Is more than normal. There is something wrong there. |
PR | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Do you expect the grip level to be lower on the grid than in the pitlane? |
PR | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Slightly, Lewis. |
FL | Nico Hulkenberg | Brad Joyce | Drivers give feedback on their practice starts. Not much initial torque. Too little initial torque. |
FL | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | Copy that, Nico. I’ll feed that back. Too much initial torque. |
FL | Nico Hulkenberg | Brad Joyce | Oh, not too much, too little. Too little. |
FL | Unknown | Sebastian Vettel | And clutch eight. Clutch eight. All systems are good. Gearbox is good. |
FL | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Start was not so good. Was under-engaged, I think? |
FL | Bernadette Collins | Jenson Button | And Jenson, brakes are good. Brakes are good, no more warming on the brakes. No more warming. And yellow G3. Yellow G3. |
FL | Paul Davison | Unknown | Can we keep the clutch setting? |
FL | Unknown | Paul Davison | Yes, OK. |
FL | Paul Davison | Jules Bianchi | Yeah, so torque three. Torque three with the engine. Two tyre warming. |
FL | Bernadette Collins | Jenson Button | OK Jenson. And launch map on. Launch map on. |
1 | Andrew Murdoch | Felipe Massa | Massa has collided with Raikkonen’s car following a crash on the Wellington Straight and is driving back to the pits with damage. OK Felipe, are you OK? Felipe, are you OK? |
1 | Felipe Massa | Andrew Murdoch | I can come back like that? Let me know, otherwise I stop. |
1 | Xevi Pujolar | Jean-Eric Vergne | The race is red-flagged following Raikkonen’s crash. Vergne and Perez collided at turn one. Tell us if you have got damage in the front wing, Jev? |
1 | Jean-Eric Vergne | Xevi Pujolar | Not sure. I’m not really sure damage, I’ve not seen anything flying. |
1 | Xevi Pujolar | Jean-Eric Vergne | That will be box, Jev. Box for front wing and tyres. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Hamilton made minor contact with Vettel at Village at the start Steering feels a little bit light. Just please check the front wing and if I’ve got any damage on the rest of my car. |
1 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK, copy that. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Bring spare parts just in case, guys. |
1 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Copy that, Lewis. We’re on it. |
1 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | OK, check the front-left corner, in terms of numbers. I had a little bit of touch with Hamilton’s wheel. Also, I will drive by close to the pit wall, so If you could stand out and have a good look. I don’t think it’s damaged, but if you could have a good look. |
1 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Copy. |
1 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Sergio Perez | Yeah, what happened on the launch? |
1 | Sergio Perez | Gianpiero Lambiase | Basically, I throw the first clutch and nothing happened. I had no torque at all. And then I throw the second one to try and see… and basically nothing happened. |
1 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | The race will be restarted behind the Safety Car. That’s our information at the moment. |
1 | Kamui Kobayashi | Tim Wright | Kobayashi was also involved in the Raikkonen crash. Please look at my car. On the straight, I hit with the Ferrari because… I try to avoid it, I went to gras but… I don’t know. I’m not sure. |
1 | Tim Wright | Kamui Kobayashi | OK, Kamui. Understood. Understood. |
1 | Max Chilton | Unknown | Chilton’s car was damaged in the Raikkonen accident and he came into the pits at the end of lap one, under the red flag. I know you’ve probably got a thousand things to worry about, but if this red goes on much longer, then obviously the race is going to go on longer and there’s more time for that rain coming at the rain. So maybe go hard, run long and hope for the rain? It’s one less stop, but it’s down to you. |
1 | Unknown | Max Chilton | Max, we copy everything you say but we’re happy with our strategy at the minute, please. Thank you. |
1 | Jean-Eric Vergne | Xevi Pujolar | OK, I jump out. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Is the wind direction the same today? |
1 | Jock Clear | Lewis Hamilton | Lewis, this is Jockey. Very similar to yesterday. It’s come round about 20 degrees. It’s now directly right to left along Hangar Straight. As you see it from right to left. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Jock Clear | OK Jock. What’re your thoughts on front wing? And then… |
1 | Jock Clear | Lewis Hamilton | Down half a turn on front flap is what Bono [Peter Bonnington] and I agreed. I’m happy with that. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Jock Clear | Yep. |
1 | Jock Clear | Lewis Hamilton | Diff mode, stay where you are I think, at the moment. Just to make you aware… |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Jock Clear | Interrupting Am I allowed to go up to the five? |
1 | Jock Clear | Lewis Hamilton | On diff high-speed? Yeah, OK. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Jock Clear | Might be able to. |
1 | Jock Clear | Lewis Hamilton | You are going to do another start procedure before the start of this race. You’re gonna start behind the Safety Car, but you are going to do a bite-point find as soon as you fire up and then go strat mode five and then RS modes will be on and then you’ll launch off the grid. |
1 | Lewis Hamilton | Jock Clear | OK. And for this lap? What do I do strat wise? |
1 | Jock Clear | Lewis Hamilton | So you’ll be in strat mode five and we’ll run the brake magic until I tell you to get it off. |
1 | Valtteri Bottas | Jonathan Eddollls | Gonna be start behind the Safety Car, yeah? |
1 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | That’s correct. So it’ll be start just like we did in… it was… yeah, Monaco. Start behind the Safety Car, we’ll go around, do a lap, the Safety Car will come in and then that is virtually lap two of the race – this is lap one of the race. So for info, don’t forget you can overtake from that Safety Car line. |
1 | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | And just give me as much info as I need in terms of tyres, etc. Warm up and temps. |
1 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Understood. I think you can give them a pretty good work out on this lap. |
2 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | After an hour long delay, the race resumes under Safety Car And remember, ten car lengths behind Safety Car. |
2 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Brakes are starting to come up now. Just need to work them a little bit more. Tyres are nine front, eight and a half rear. |
2 | Bernadette Collins | Jenson Button | And Jenson, Yellow G3. Yellow G3 and Safety Car in this lap. Safety Car in this lap. |
3 | Gary Gannon | Max Chilton | The race has now restarted Torque seven for running. Torque seven for running. And will be in this lap for drive-through penalty. Build tyre temps, build front tyre temps. |
4 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Hamilton has passed Magnussen for third OK Lewis, so Nico 4.5 seconds ahead. |
5 | Xevi Pujolar | Jean-Eric Vergne | OK, good job Jev. Now close the gap with Grosjean ahead. |
5 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | We’re on the bottom of the state of store, no overtake. No overtake. |
5 | Gary Gannon | Max Chilton | Max, second sector was one second quicker than Jules. Third sector was one second quicker, so you are catching the pack. Good job. |
6 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | And remember, try slower in for better exit. Gap, 5.4. |
6 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | The Mercedes drivers get their usual information about each others’ driving techniques. OK Lewis, gap now 5.4. Loss to Nico, braking, turn six [Brooklands]. |
7 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | By lap seven Rosbreg is almost 14 seconds ahead of third-placed Button, with Hamilton between them. So Nico, you are in your Safety Car window. |
8 | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | Just struggling with overall grip. |
8 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK, understood. |
9 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK, so try an earlier and faster apex in turn 15 [Stowe]. |
9 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | So Nico braking later, turn 15. And half tenth faster, sector one. Gap at 5.5. You are in your Safety Car window. |
10 | Andrea Stella | Fernando Alonso | Warning – on corner 18 [Club], we have to stay on the track on corner 18. |
11 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Ricciardo passed Hulkenberg on lap nine. OK mate, nice job. Let’s get after Alonso. |
11 | Craig Gardiner | Esteban Gutierrez | Gutierrez has collided with Maldonado at Vale Is the car OK, Esteban? |
11 | Esteban Gutierrez | Craig Gardiner | Not, it is not OK! |
11 | Craig Gardiner | Esteban Gutierrez | No reply is heard from Gutierrez’s car – but he can be heard crunching through a gravel trap and into retirement. Understood, is it just the front wing? |
11 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Sergio Perez | OK Checo, so this is the Bianchi, Vergne, Grosjean, Maldonado train ahead, OK? So it’s Bianchi at the head of these three cars ahead of you. |
12 | Marcus Ericsson | Angel Baena | Ericsson is cruising with apparent suspension damage I have a damaged car. Front suspension, left. |
12 | Angel Baena | Marcus Ericsson | OK, roger. If it’s safe to bring it back, bring it back. |
13 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Still yellow, yellow, turn one, two [Abbey/Farm]. Be more progressive with the steering, turns one and two. And be aware, fuel is to target, but you do not have excess. We’re just safe at the moment. |
14 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | At the next stop, what are you thinking on front wing? |
14 | Nico Hulkenberg | Brad Joyce | I have no idea. Because we have got two big issues. I don’t know. |
14 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | Copy that. We’re fighting the wind, I think. It’s the wind. |
14 | Nico Hulkenberg | Brad Joyce | Well maybe I should take more flaps, because the high-speed understeer is absolutely killing us. I can handle the stability with my torque and engine braking. |
14 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | Copy that Nico. Watch the track limits in turn nine [Copse]. Track limits, turn nine. |
14 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK, Jenson. Let’s work the front-left tyre a little harder, if you can. More temperature in the front-left. |
15 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | So two tenths faster, sector two. So pitting the hards for the next stint, we’re thinking one turn down, maybe one and a half. Let me know what you think. |
15 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | One turn, I think. |
15 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Rosberg made his first pit stop on lap 18. So Nico we may extend one more lap. Just let us know how the tyres are looking, look like they’re coming back a little bit. |
15 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Tyres are good. |
15 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Copy, we’re going to go one more lap. |
16 | Gary Gannon | Max Chilton | Great job, Max. It was a 44.4 from Kobayashi. He’s within reach, let’s get him in the next lap or two. |
16 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Ricciardo pits for the only time in the race. You’ll come out behind Sutil, ahead of Vergne. Maybe close behind Sutil. |
17 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis you’re the fastest man on track. |
17 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | So Vettel ahead’s on a two stop anyway, Nico. So let’s settle down and try and make this one work. |
17 | Mark Temple | Kevin Magnussen | And how are the tyres? |
17 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | Having started 14th Bottas has just passed Button for third behind the two Mercedes. Brilliant stuff, Valtteri. |
18 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So push hard now, Nico. Push hard now. It won’t be long. |
18 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | So we’re going to be target, plus two. Target plus two. You are one tenth faster, sector one. |
18 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis, three tenths faster sector one. It’s hammer time. |
19 | Kevin Magnussen | Mark Temple | Tyres are OK. Tyres are OK. |
19 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | Great management, Valtteri. To safeguard our day we need to run this tyre right to the end of its life. So how many laps do you think left? |
19 | Valtteri Bottas | Jonathan Eddollls | Difficult to get the exact [unclear] so, I think the wear is OK. So, could be up to ten laps. |
19 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | Copy, good feedback. We’ll just keep an eye on lap times. That’s good news. |
20 | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | Next car in front is Jev, four seconds. Use the hards for him – 41.5 last timed lap. Forty-one point five. |
20 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | The first sign of the problem which eventually caused Rosberg’s retirement. Gearbox problem on the downshift. |
20 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Copy, copy. Will advise. |
21 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel. Hulkenberg ahead is one-stopping. Need to get past him as soon as possible. |
21 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So we’re continuing to look at the problem, Nico. No information at the moment. |
22 | Francesco Nenci | Jules Bianchi | Pace much better. You’re much closer to Maldonado now. |
22 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | You have now jumped a lot of cars ahead. We’re looking good. Nice job, mate. |
22 | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | What about tyres? Tyre phase and balance? |
22 | Daniil Kvyat | Marco Matassa | All good. Car now is a little bit too much on the nose, so 1.4 [unclear]. |
22 | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | Copy. |
23 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | Behind Vergne is clear, he’s on two stops. His tyres are seven laps old Mediums. |
23 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So tyres were evenly worn front and rear. Front a little bit more – 50 percent remaining. |
23 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So, menu ten to one. Change to gearbox settings should be transparent. Menu ten to one. |
24 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Tyres are starting to drop off. |
24 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK copy that message, Lewis. One more lap. One more lap. |
24 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | This is a good in-lap, Lewis. Just keep on it. |
24 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel. Everybody ahead will have to stop again. Three cars will have to fit hards and they will be slow. Three cars ahead will fit hards. |
25 | Jenson Button | Dave Robson | The last two laps, Alonso’s gone off the circuit at Copse. |
25 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, understood. Understood. Doing a great job. |
25 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, Yellow G3. Yellow G3. Target plus two. |
26 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | While Rosberg put on mediums again at his first pit stop, Hamilton switched to the hards. Although hewas warned they would take a while to warm up his first full lap out of the pits turned out to be the fastest of the race. OK Lewis, this tyre has a warm-up slope on the outlap, so we suggest diff entry five for this tyre. Diff entry five. |
26 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Don’t worry about the pit stops, guys. But let’s get a good one next one, OK? |
26 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, so we are still looking for target plus two. Alonso’s pitted but has a five second stop-go, so this is all good. |
27 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | So Lewis pushing very hard at the moment. Consider brake balance rearwards for ten to 13. Gap to Lewis, 4.8. |
28 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | And HPP4 position ten when you can. Another nine-tenths that last lap. Gap at 3.2. |
30 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Rosberg’s gearbox fails into Village, allowing Hamilton through into the lead Problem on the upshift at turn eight [Woodcote]. |
30 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Copy, understood. We’re looking at it. |
30 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Consider slowing me down just to get me to the finish line? |
30 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Copy that, Nico. We will advise. No change at the moment on gearbox settings. |
30 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Cause I could stop shifting so much, if you need to. |
30 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | OK, really having big problems with the gearbox so please advise. Staying in fifth gear at the moment. I lost it again on downshifting. |
30 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Some of these messages may not be in chronological order as they were edited differntly on different channels. So Nico menu ten to eight and leave it in eight. |
30 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Stay in sixth, Nico. Stay in sixth. |
30 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | Yeah, I don’t have drive at the moment. |
30 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | If you don’t have drive, try shifting Nico. |
31 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis, Nico is reporting a gearbox issue. He has a shift problem. So don’t take any risks. |
31 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis, so Nico is trying to get this car home. So take no risks. Just caution with the traffic. |
31 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis, so gap to the car in third place in 24 seconds. |
31 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | OK, I’m trying everything. Anything else I can do? |
31 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK, not at the moment. We’re still looking. |
31 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Driver default 01. Try driver default 01. |
31 | Nico Rosberg | Tony Ross | OK, anything else? |
31 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Stand by. So we’ve got about thirty seconds before we need to turn off, Nico… |
31 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | Twenty seconds before we need to turn off… |
31 | Tony Ross | Nico Rosberg | OK, so stop stop. Turn off. Stop, stop. Turn off, Nico. Going to save the engine. |
31 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis just look after the car as much as you can. Yellow, yellow, Maggotts/Becketts. I’m afraid Nico’s had to stop. |
31 | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | How’s our pace? Is it worth going longer? |
31 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | We are looking into it, we are looking into your question. |
32 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Yep, pace is still good. You’re now the second quickest car on track. Rosberg has retired. |
33 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | So for info, Vettel ahead is on 21-lap old used [medium tyres], so he has to stop again. So in reality, we’re in P2. So keep your head down, we need to get to the end. |
33 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Try to go forwards on bias if you can. It might help the rear temps. We don’t need that help for reliability, just for tyre temps. It might help tyre temps. |
33 | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | Nico, so we’re 20 laps to go. You should be able to push these [tyres] all the way to the end. |
34 | Gary Gannon | Max Chilton | So Max, for the race situation, because we were in the pit-lane we missed that extra formation lap, which put us one lap down to the field. So we are one lap down to Jules, we’ll keep pushing to the end, hopefully we can catch back up to Kobayashi and regain that position and we’ll keep pushing and take positions as other people go out. Sorry for the situation but you’re doing a great job, keep pushing. |
34 | Max Chilton | Gary Gannon | How far to Kobayashi? |
34 | Gary Gannon | Max Chilton | Kobayashi is about 70 percent of a lap ahead. Kobayashi’s in turn four [The Loop] now. So we need to make that up to him, but he’s lapping much slower so we’ll see how we’re doing pace wise and he’ll hopefully be stopping again. |
35 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Sergio Perez | Perez passed Sutil on lap 37. C’mon Checo, let’s try and get him [Sutil] nice and early. So he doesn’t disrupt our rhythm. |
36 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | Watch overlaying brake and throttle. Watch overlaying brake and throttle. |
37 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | While Vettel pitted on lap 10 and had to make another pit stop to get to the end, Ricciardo’s first pit stop was on lap 15 and he felt able to make his tyres last until the flag. Daniel, do you think you can do 15 more laps? Do you think you can do 15 more laps on this set? |
37 | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | Yes. |
37 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK, understood. |
37 | Sergio Perez | Gianpiero Lambiase | Sutil is going wide in turn nine [Copse] all the time. |
37 | Gianpiero Lambiase | Sergio Perez | Copy that. Good info. Thank you. |
37 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Vettel came out of the pits ahead of Alonso on lap 34 but was passed by the driver, who defended vigorously when Vettel attacked him back. He can’t do that! I would’ve crashed into him! |
37 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Understood. You’ve got plenty of laps. Let’s do it again. |
38 | Fernando Alonso | Andrea Stella | Alonso complains in Eng-talian. Track limits a tutti, eh? [Track limits for all, eh?] |
39 | Adrian Sutil | Marco Schupbach | What’s going on with the brakes again? I mean, how can I race? |
39 | Marco Schupbach | Adrian Sutil | We are pushing for you, we are looking into it. Keep racing as good as you can. |
39 | Fernando Alonso | Andrea Stella | Track limits [unclear]! |
39 | Andrea Stella | Fernando Alonso | Understood. Track limits for everyone and the car behind [Vettel] included. |
40 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | So Jenson, Ricciardo on 24-lap-old tyres. You’re currently six tenths faster than Ricciardo. Six tenths faster. |
41 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | These tyres are pretty good. There’s a lot of life left in them. |
41 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK, copy that Lewis. |
41 | Valtteri Bottas | Jonathan Eddollls | Are you happy with the tyre energies? For me it feels OK. |
41 | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | For sure. Don’t push any harder than this. We’re in a safe position. |
41 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson. We think Ricciardo will try and get to the end. We think he will try and get to the end, so we need to chase him down and pass him on track. |
42 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Pace is good. You’re doing a very good job. Gap to Button – nine seconds. Still nine seconds to Button. He’s doing 39.0s. |
42 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | …and another one. So track limits, Alonso. Went wide again. |
42 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Understood. You need to use the charge. Either charge ten or use overtake. One or the other. |
43 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Appears to be in reference to the pair going side-by-side into Copse on lap 42. He didn’t leave a space! I could’ve easily given him a puncture! |
43 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Understood. Stay patient. You’re clearly quicker. |
44 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, you do not need to look after the right-hand side tyres. You can push in left-hand corners. Push in the left-hand corners. |
44 | Andrea Stella | Fernando Alonso | And we are reporting track limits to the race direction. |
44 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, pace management is good at the moment. You’re doing a good job at the moment. Button will not catch you. |
44 | Mark Temple | Kevin Magnussen | OK Kevin, ten laps to go. Tyres are good, we can push more. Let’s close up on Vettel and Alonso, see if we can get them in the end. |
45 | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | OK, still half a second faster. Still half a second faster. We are catching him [Hulkenberg]. |
45 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | And another one. |
45 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Understood |
46 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | And another one… |
46 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Daniel, if you can maintain a 39.2, Button will not catch you. If you can maintain 39.2, it will be easy. |
46 | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | OK, understood. Thank you. |
46 | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | Temps OK? |
46 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Yeah, temps are looking better now. Just keep working at it. |
47 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, should be easy, but don’t let him get DRS. Do not let him get within DRS. We need to keep a good five second margin. |
48 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Vettel finally passed Alonso after another close encounter between the pair at Brooklands, which appears to be what he is referring to here. He did the same thing again! He can’t do that! If I don’t move out of the way, he’s launching me off the track! |
48 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Good job. OK Sebastian, five laps to go. Button ahead, 39.0. |
49 | Fernando Alonso | Andrea Stella | While Vettel was complaining about Alonso, Alonso was complaining about Vettel. He takes the DRS thanks to the track limits at the last corner! He take the DRS out of turn five [Aintree] and out of turn nine [Copse]! Either way! What more I need to do? |
49 | Andrea Stella | Fernando Alonso | That is clear. That is clear. |
49 | Fernando Alonso | Andrea Stella | Yes and he got the position immediately! Immediately! If not five seconds at the end of the race… [edited] |
49 | Fernando Alonso | Andrea Stella | Some of these messages may not be in chronological order as they were edited differntly on different channels. I need to get back the position immeditately. |
50 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | Jenson this is really good. Currently more than one second a lap faster than Ricciardo. |
51 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | OK Daniel, three laps to go. Button’s last lap was a 38.5. Gap is now four seconds. Four seconds gap. Pick up the pace a little bit. |
51 | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | The burning smell was likely Maldonado’s smoking engine ahead Check the brakes, because I can smell something. I can smell something burning. |
51 | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Understood. Understood. |
51 | Mark Slade | Pastor Maldonado | Maldonado has pulled off circuit with a smoking engine Stop the car please, Pastor. Stop the car. Stop the car. |
51 | Pastor Maldonado | Mark Slade | Yeah, I will stop. |
51 | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Maldonado ahead may be leaking oil. May be oil from Maldonado car ahead of you. |
52 | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | OK Jenson, this is the last lap. Starting the last lap. Big grandstand finish, JB. |
52 | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | OK Lewis exercise a bit of caution sector three, may be some oil down. Maldonado stopped turn one [Abbey], there is a yellow there. |
VL | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | You can’t touch this, Lewis! Home grand prix win! Beautiful work. Lap it up boy! |
VL | Lewis Hamilton | Peter Bonnington | England! What a great feeling guys! I couldn’t be happier. I’m sorry about yesterday but fantastic job today, this weekend, as always. |
VL | Paddy Lowe | Lewis Hamilton | Great drive Lewis! Fantastic drive, really controlled. Well done! |
VL | Peter Bonnington | Lewis Hamilton | Hamilton celebrated with doughnuts on his return to the pits. OK Lewis, let’s look after this motor. We need it again. |
VL | Jonathan Eddollls | Valtteri Bottas | Wow! We said this morning, Valterri, that was going to be fun, but I don’t know where you pulled that one from. That was absolutely unbelieveable! Great recovery by the whole team after difficult weekend, especially yesterday. But absolutely unbelievable drive. Well done! |
VL | Valtteri Bottas | Jonathan Eddollls | Yes! [Laughs] Thank you. Thank you guys. Every single one. At the factory, at Mercedes, in the race team. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We’re on the right way. |
VL | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | Come on! Woo! |
VL | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | Nice job. I could tell you wanted to one stop all weekend, mate! |
VL | Daniel Ricciardo | Simon Rennie | Nice. Last lap couldn’t have come sooner! |
VL | Simon Rennie | Daniel Ricciardo | He made us sweat a little bit, last lap! |
VL | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | That’s a great drive. Such a shame we just missed out on the end there. But a great drive. I think at the beginning of the weekend, we’d have taken P4, so top job Jenson. |
VL | Jenson Button | Dave Robson | In his 15th British Grand Prix Button once again failed to finish on the podium, crossing the line less than a second behind third-placed Ricciardo. [Sighs] He was one more lap! One more lap… |
VL | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | Yeah, I know. I know. It’s incredibly Frustrating. I think for the whole weekend, we deserved it as well. But, never mind. P4 is a good result and, yeah. It’s been a nice day. So, Lewis won the race. Bottas had a very impressive race from where he qualified and was second. Ricciardo obviously just ahead of us third. We were fourth. Vettel and Alonso had a big battle and Vettel won that, so P5. Alonso P6. Kevin seventh. Hulkenberg eighth and the two Toro Rossos Kvyat and Vergne ninth and tenth. |
VL | Jenson Button | Dave Robson | Yeah, it was a tough old race. Strange with the different tyres. The variety of them was much better with us – I don’t know why that is. Just general grip. Less movement with the tyre – I guess that’s why. |
VL | Dave Robson | Jenson Button | Yep, OK. Understood. I think, yeah, our pace on the Hards was not too bad at all. |
VL | Guillaume Rocquelin | Sebastian Vettel | Alright, good job Sebastian. Sorry mate. We picked the wrong one there. You’re P5. We decided to keep Daniel out. So Daniel did one stop. He’s P3. |
VL | Sebastian Vettel | Guillaume Rocquelin | Yep. I saw that. Did what we could from where we were. But.. yeah. Decided for the wrong one then. |
VL | Christian Horner | Sebastian Vettel | Your move on Fernando… I tell you what… big set of balls to go wheel-to-wheel with him through Woodcote. So, I mean, that was move of the race there. Move of the race. |
VL | Mark Temple | Kevin Magnussen | We finished in P7. Pretty tough race. Obviously we had quite a bit of traffic and I think that maybe hurt our tyres a bit. But I think you did a good solid job. We’ll have a look and see if there’s anything else we can do better. |
VL | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | Good job Nico. So P8. P8. That was a good job, that. |
VL | Nico Hulkenberg | Brad Joyce | Yeah, cheers guys today. Unbelieveable. It’s [unclear] like it was on Friday. It’s so difficult to drive. We just need to get on top of that. |
VL | Brad Joyce | Nico Hulkenberg | Copy that, Nico. Copy that. |
VL | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | P9, Daniil. P9. Well done, well done. Very good race. |
VL | Daniil Kvyat | Marco Matassa | OK guys. I gave it everything. I gave it all I could. |
VL | Marco Matassa | Daniil Kvyat | Yeah, we saw that. We saw that. We all think that you did a very good job. Well done, well done. |
VL | Xevi Pujolar | Jean-Eric Vergne | Vergne took a point having been 18th at the restart. OK Jev. Good job, despite the problems at the first start. Car in the points. Very good drive. Very good, solid drive. |

Good battle of words between the top two on the track. Both trying to get what ever advantage they can find, and not even for a top position.

25 Dave Robson Jenson Button OK Lewis, understood. Understood. Doing a great job.
Did Robson actually say Lewis?
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
9th July 2014, 13:24
@ambroserpm Nope, was a typo, have changed it.

Never seen such message before. Do they only do this for the British national anthem or do they do the same in other countries?
Bullfrog (@bullfrog)
9th July 2014, 14:30
Can’t they play the national anthem on the engines any more, with these new hybrid ones?
Keith Campbell (@keithedin)

I hope this is a typo and not what was actually said ;)

Can’t believe Alonso got a flag for going out of the track and others didn’t. double standards much?.
Atticus (@atticus-2)
9th July 2014, 14:09
He got it very early on when he basically did it much more often than others.
But yeah, Vettel did it just as much in their battle, he even went wide at the exit of Copse when he finally passed Alonso and no one cared.
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
9th July 2014, 16:59
@zoomracing @atticus-2 From watching the onboard feed I got the impression Alonso was doing it more than the others. Given he was warned about it halfway through the race and continued to do it throughout his battle with Vettel I’d say he’s lucky not to have had a penalty.
I certainly find it hard to agree he was in some way hard done by for receiving an admonishment that turned out to be of no consequence whatsoever. I doubt the prospect of having a flag waved at him is going to put him or any of his rivals off doing the same in future.

Alonso to the press after the race: “We had even discussed with the team two laps before the battle when Sebastian went out of the pit if we retire the car because we had some aerodynamic problems.”
There’s nothing about that in the messages. How could they discuss it?
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)
9th July 2014, 19:31
That discussion wasn’t broadcast. As has been noted here in the past we usually don’t hear that many messages involving Ferrari’s drivers, particularly given how popular they are. This race was a bit of an exception to that because we heard a lot of Alonso’s comments about Vettel.

Just being tongue-in-cheek here…was waiting to read on lap 31, after Bonnington says to LH: I’m afraid Nico’s had to stop.
LH: I’m gutted.
Ylli (@yllibeli)
9th July 2014, 15:01
I think tha LH was as happy because he would win, concerned if his car would fail like Nico’s, sad because of not challenging Nico. I believe this is what he meant by “i’m gutted”
Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine)

@robbie Yeah that was begging for a sarcastic response. Maybe there was one but it wasn’t broadcast…

I think JB would be the best possibile test driver, after he retires. He may go for commentator, which is fine, but you’ve got to admit his feedback is so enjoyable for us and surely it’s immensely appreciated by his engineers.
LexBlair (@lexblair)
9th July 2014, 15:24
I doubt he would go back to test driving. ;) I hope he gets a commentator gig after retirement. He really is very well-spoken and obviously knows what he is talking about. He is charismatic and funny too. He would surely make for a great commentator… (He also has good chemistry with the BBC/Sky guys..)

Really impressed by how switched on Rosberg is, he’s really thinking about every possibility to score points, you can see how championship minded he is. Although the desperation is his voice was also clear to see. So was Hulkenberg’s, he was very unhappy with his car!

9th July 2014, 20:25
Yes.
MtlRacer (@mtlracer)
9th July 2014, 21:31
That’s why I find it silly. Of course the underlying meaning is pull out all the stops and go for broke. It’s also a lame play on words/sounds — “Hamilton” -> “Hamil Time” -> “Hammer Time”?
Of course I’d love to see the home video of Lewis dressed up and spoofing U Can’t Touch This when he was five years old.

According to a tweet from Ferrari, he did:

For me the most warning message was the one between Sutil and his engineer.
What is going on at Sauber? Have they lost everything. I remember what stress Sutil put on the word ‘again’. Since 2012 they followed McLaren into the abyss.

Anyone else laugh at the below?
34 Gary Gannon Max Chilton So Max, for the race situation, because we were in the pit-lane we missed that extra formation lap, which put us one lap down to the field. So we are one lap down to Jules, we’ll keep pushing to the end, hopefully we can catch back up to Kobayashi and regain that position and we’ll keep pushing and take positions as other people go out. Sorry for the situation but you’re doing a great job, keep pushing.
34 Max Chilton Gary Gannon How far to Kobayashi?
34 Gary Gannon Max Chilton Kobayashi is about 70 percent of a lap ahead. Kobayashi’s in turn four [The Loop] now. So we need to make that up to him, but he’s lapping much slower so we’ll see how we’re doing pace wise and he’ll hopefully be stopping again.

From reading these all season it seems that the Mercedes pitwall is the only one that really “coaches” the drivers corner to corner. All the teams tell their drivers things like “your teammate is faster than you in sector two, your up in the others”, but only Mercedes seem to break it down further and give corner specific into at times. Also, “slower in for a faster exit” has become a regular message for Rosberg.

What a push over Alonso was..He demands the position immediately and asking the penalty to the other driver who was making less or same as alo’s mistake..
But in Media everyone is nice and giving hype about the samurai..he has the talent, but making him the great is bit overhyped..Seb is far far better than Alo.
