Things aren’t looking good for Sauber …
So if I’m correct only one of the Mercedes drivers can win the championship by now? Good job by Maldonado though.

@magon4 – Indeed, even if he flicks it into warp-drive and dominates the remaining races, Nico is now counting on Lewis not following home each time. Reliability and the Brazilian weather are now Rosberg’s only hopes.

@myself Red Bull in 2011 with 650 which Mercedes will break easily. They’ll have 700+ I’m guessing.

PorscheF1 (@xtwl)
2nd November 2014, 22:18
@kingshark Next time I find some free time I’m going to dedicate it to writing why Webber is not at all worse than Rosberg, even why Rosberg isn’t even close to Webber in their respective primes.
Kingshark (@kingshark)
2nd November 2014, 23:04
@xtwl
That is one of the most laughable things I’ve ever read. Webber, the same guy who couldn’t win a single race on merit in either the RB7 and RB9? The same guy who got demolished by Vettel (a good but not great driver who has been outclassed by Danny Ric this season) is suddenly leaps and bounds better than Rosberg?
PorscheF1 (@xtwl)
3rd November 2014, 7:00
@kingshark Webber his reputation is largely being looked bad upon because of their perception of Vettel. The fact you call Vettel a ‘good but not great’ driver means the discussion ends here as you’re clearly not objective on the matter. But just for yourself, please take a look at Rosberg his four wins and how he won them. What an average driver he really is with some good days along the way but mainly a overpowered Mercedes that brings him P2 with ease.
Kingshark (@kingshark)
3rd November 2014, 7:30
@xtwl
Do you think Vettel is a stronger teammate than Hamilton? I don’t.
And Rosberg is certainly putting up much more of a fight against Lewis, while Mark basically rolled over on his back against Seb in 2011 and 2013. You know why those two seasons were so boring? Because;
1. The RB7 and RB9 were the best cars of the field by a hefty margin
and 2. Webber being so inept in the later stages of his career.
If you want to look at Rosberg’s quality as a driver, don’t stick to 2014. Watch him when he was younger in his Williams days.
Bahrain 2006
The consistency he showed in 2007, especially during the later half of the season. He had a brilliant drive in Brazil.
In 2008 he scored 2 podiums in a car which finished 8th (!) in the constructor’s championship and was virtually hopeless around every other circuit.
In 2009 he was consistently beating the Toyota’s and Ferrari’s, and challenging the Brawn’s, Red Bull’s, and McLaren’s in a car which was perhaps the 6th best of the season.
JerseyF1 (@jerseyf1)
3rd November 2014, 9:26
@kingshark
Does that make Maldonado even better than Rosberg given his 2012 victory in a car which finished 8th in the constructors?
In 2010 Webber was on a par with Seb throughout the season but threw it away with a couple of silly mistakes towards the end of the year. In 2014 Rosberg has been generally outclassed by Hamilton across the whole year both in terms of race speed and also making a couple of silly mistakes.
It’s well known that Webber’s issues with the dominant Red Bulls was more about his inability to get the most out of the blown diffusers which you could argue is what makes him a less good driver, but there’s nothing to indicate that Rosberg would have coped any better in the same situation nor to suggest that Webber would not have easily cruised to a large number of second places in this year’s Mercedes.
I’d rank Rosberg along with some of the top ‘second drivers’ who given the right circumstances could have won a WDC along with (Webber, Coulthard and Barrichello) but not in the same league as Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso.
Kingshark (@kingshark)

@jerseyf1
No, because to put it quite bluntly, the FW34 was a better car than the FW30, much better. Remember how Williams were in podium contention for Valencia, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi on top of winning in Barcelona? The FW30 was nowhere near as good.
On what planet was Webber “on par” with Vettel in 2010? Vettel lost 3 wins due no fault of his own in 2010 but reliability (Bahrain, Australia, Korea). How many did Webber lose in 2010? None, and he still lost the WDC despite of his luck that year. Rosberg himself lost a victory in Silverstone and a 2nd place in Singapore this year because of bad luck. In that sense, he’s been closer to Lewis than Webber was to Vettel in 2010.
Rosberg seemed to handle the blown diffuser of the Mercedes quite well in 2013. He finished just a handful (28) points behind Webber that year despite driving a far inferior car. Rosberg was much, much closer to Lewis in 2013 than Webber was to Vettel (did Mark even beat Seb once last year?). Nico scored 86% of Mark’s points despite driving a WO4 as opposed to an RB9, nuff’ said IMO.
Rosberg is likely easily as good/fast as Vettel. Problem is, up until 2014 he’s never had a car to fight for the WDC, and when he finally does, he has Lews Hamilton as his teammate. I also don’t doubt that Rosberg could have done what Vettel did in those Red Bull’s from 2010-2013.

2nd November 2014, 23:16
Lol. Webber on the #6 would be already beaten long ago.
A driver who made a name for himself for doing some “great recoveries” to finish exactly where he started, because his starts were always beyond bad.
A guy that on 2011 and 2013 combined, won 1 race opposite to Vettels 24. And even that one Vettel helped him to get.
Today’s Rosberg would mop the floor with prime Webber.

Absolutely! Rosberg has shown that he can’t handle high pressured situations – he has a weak underbelly. Best strategy for Lewis is to continue with the same driving style and mentality that has brought him to this dominant position.

Another scenario is “Nico wins Brazil, Lewis DNF makes Nico 1 point ahead, and both crash in Abu Double which makes Rosberg WDC without double points in play” – Rare but possible if Merc isn’t reliable.
Chris (@cgturbo)
2nd November 2014, 22:40
@functor
If, for example, Lewis bins it in Brazil for whatever mechanical or driver error… Would Nico do a Senna/Prost and ‘purposely’ crash into Lewis in Abu Dhabi to win the championship?
Or would Nico not want to win in such a manner?
Fun (@functor)
2nd November 2014, 22:47
@cgturbo
Even if they don’t crash(purposely) in Abu Dhabi, (with Lewis binning in Brazil) , they still have even to play – with only 1 point difference. The thing is it has happened 3 times with 25 catchup (2 times with lewis, 1 time with Nico) this season.
The point I’m trying to make (As much as I hate Double points and rooting LH for WDC) is that …. The WDC still can be decided without Double points into play (as many believe).
BTW why would you think Nico will be the one to purposely do Senna/Prost? It can be even Lewis hypothetically if he’s in such situation! Wrong psychology there.
Fun (@functor)
2nd November 2014, 22:49
OR it can even be just racing incident in final race…
Chris (@cgturbo)
2nd November 2014, 22:55
@functor Oh, don’t worry… I’m not trying to imply that Nico is any more/less likely to purposely crash than Lewis.
I only mentioned Nico crashing because of the 24 point situation we have have at the moment. I would have spoken equally had it been Nico with a 24 point lead.
Fer no.65 (@fer-no65)
2nd November 2014, 22:22
If Rosberg retires and Lewis wins at Brazil and the opposite happens at Abu Dhabi, Nico would be champion by 1 point, having won 5 races to Lewis 11.

William Stuart (@williamstuart)

It’s already been confirmed that it’s scrapped for next season, hasn’t it? I hope so, the only thing it does is crown an undeserving champion or make a champion look more dominant. Having those extremes in the balance is not good.

2nd November 2014, 22:42
Hamilton is clearly the better driver of the two (but then, everybody knew that anyway!!). The only reason this season appears to be a close race is because there are no other competitive cars/teams to compete for race wins and podiums. Even if Rosberg has an absolutely monstrously bad race weekend, he is still pretty much guaranteed 2nd place, which of course makes the WDC appear closer than it actually is.
10 race wins to 4 (with the same car) is a complete and utter one sided spanking!!
ed
3rd November 2014, 0:34
Exactly. If Rosberg didn’t DNF on Singapore, he would still be behind Hamilton on the standings. Again after losing a 25+ points lead by being the lesser driver.
I remember after China that Hamilton said he hoped the other teams catch up with Mercedes cuz it would be easier to fight Rosberg if someone finishes ahead of him on a not so good day of his. This didn’t happen and even when Rosberg seemed average at best, like in Suzuka, he was still 2nd.
gweilo8888 (@gweilo8888)
2nd November 2014, 23:49
This is news? We all knew before the championship even started that only one team could possibly win it. Partly due to them doing a better job with the new engine regs, mostly because the homologation regs forbid any rival to catch up during the season. This foregone conclusion will be over soon, and hopefully we can get back to real racing next year. (But somehow I doubt it, in which case we probably have a decade of dominance the likes we’ve never seen ahead of us, all due to poor rule making.)
William Stuart (@williamstuart)
3rd November 2014, 0:00
F1 has always had dominant teams, that’s as much part of the nature of F1 than anything else. It is highly unlikely that Mercedes will be as dominant next year, as the Renault will improve their engine more than Mercedes, and with the Red Bull chassis being at least as good (likely better) than the Mercedes chassis it will be a lot closer. Also, we have Ricciardo driving for them too which will further close the gap.
ed
3rd November 2014, 0:07
Yeah, like this homologation stuff started this year.
Everybody agreed to the rules years ago and 2014’s rules too were known for at least 3 years.
Mercedes didn’t cheat to get all this superiority. Go blame the ones who didn’t made their part right.
Last year was much, much worse than this year in every aspect of racing. It was boring as hell.
This year, not so much.
