Testing notes

Jarno Trulli gets his first taste of the Lotus T127 today. The team have completed 174 laps’ testing this week, just 29 fewer than Virgin who were able to test throughout last week as well.

Two teams have now logged over 1,000 laps of testing – Ferrari (1,098) and Williams (1,043).

Mark Webber set the fastest time of the test so far yesterday in the Red Bull RB6 – will anyone beat his mark today?

    1. Yay for Webber. Go the Aussies!!!

      1. lotus all the way

        1. proud to be a malaysian

    2. live timing link either doesn’t work or you linked to yesterday’s page… :( we need that info please someone fix it :)

      1. Have updated the link.

    3. nevermind I found the link to today’s live times here is the link http://www.msfree.gr/ms.php?id=10840

    4. Keith, I know, Force India really confused all on this week already, but Tonio drives the car, not Jarno. : )

      1. Got the Italians mixed up! Changed it now, thanks.

    5. Not sure why Fernando’s not in the MSFree live timing screens… F1Today says he’s done 12 laps with a 1:22.023..

    6. Q. Is Sauber officially entered in the 2010 F1 championship. There appears to be a noticeable lack of team and driver info on the official F1 web site. If yes, why no info, if no why are they testing?
I am so confused. And why doe sthe F1 regime and FIA not have a contact department for asking simple questions, like why does your web page take so long to load on older machines.
      So insular they are.

    7. I even tried to trick it into giving me Alonzo’s times but no go.. I wonder whats up.. :(

      1. Not sure how their system works, but looks as if they either aren’t receiving Alonso’s data, or haven’t added him as someone to receive data from, if that makes sense.

        1. Looks like they noticed, his times are up now :)

    8. Here’s hoping for a dry day, and lots of running from the new guys!

    9. An off-topic question: What is the miniature track on the north west corner of the satellite image. It seems to be a replica of the larger track.

Why has it been built on a smaller scale at the same site?

      1. In fact, a little north-east of this miniature track, there is another even more smaller version of this track.

Why are these random decorations there?

        1. Its a track for go-karts

      2. Its bernie’s very own scaled down track…

      3. Is the kart track open? Keith, in your spare time :-) pop over there and get some of the lap times.

    10. Those are cart tracks… so I guess you can work your way up racing the same lay out… a great idea actually.. 8)

    11. Kubica did six laps averaging 1.19.4!

      1. SO Renault do have a bit of speed to go with their supposed fuel efficiency, good news!

      2. Was that on the kart track?

    12. Kubica 1.19,4 (6 laps) wow, Renault has a great pace with this retro front wing. . .

    13. So, Button came out fighting then

    14. Fast lap from Button to get under 1.19, but only with a single flying lap.

Looks like Kubica is doing very consistent runs with varying fuel levels.

    15. Button Two laps

    16. Wow, I knew that Renault hasn’t dropped to the medfield as some would want, but those times are much better than I expected from the Bee :D

      1. The variance in times from lap to lap is the clearest indication to you that the times on this screen are basically meaningless. All the drivers have lap times that are varying by half a second or more from lap to lap – there’s no traffic on the road during a test, so it shows you that the cars aren’t being pushed at all. Occasionally a driver will slip a quick lap in to see how things are, but that’s still no reason to believe it’s representative – either he’ll be told to back off the next lap or it’ll be part of some plan to thrown other team’s analysis off.

Yep you are right Hairs which can only mean one thing, this day to day check up on test times is useless and gives nerds their only person to person talk during the day, and even that is through this blog!
Only the first race will show progress, and this new rule of no re fulling means only one thing : It is even harder to comprehend the true performance of a car!

    17. I’m not surprised to see the best times go down from yesterday. I expect the times to go down from one dry day to the next as they typically do from Friday practice to Saturday qualifying if weather conditions approve or remain consistent.

    18. what happened to webber? Red flagged? Is he not coming back out?

    19. so Button has the two fastest laps of the entire test. Hopefully we see a 1.17, we’ll only know a car is truly quick when it hits 1.15. Till then it’s all fuel weights.

      1. The 1:18.8 was set on a 2 lap stint and the 1:19.0 on a 3 lap stint. I’m hoping he wasn’t running on dry!

        1. Nah, presumably it was to see what happened to the tyres more than anything else. The teams really arn’t going for the times. They don’t care at this stage, they just want to know they’re numbers are right.

McLaren was saying it was already 3 seconds faster than last years at Xmas so taking them up on their word them an all the front runners just arn’t showing us the money.

    20. Im confused, didnt button test yesterday?I thought they were alternating the drivers each day, or are they alternating weeks?

      1. most teams let the drivers have 2 days in a row, and then switch…

Merc are swopping drivers each day

the new teams, no one knows what they are doing, let alone them ;)

    21. StefanGP with toyota2010 at bahrain

      USF1 missing 4 races…

they have supposedly asked to miss 4 races… , this is not little-league, this is F1

my vote goes to Stefan GP to get the nod… we need real outfits who are serious…..

Bernie and Todt, give USf1 the boot and let Stefan get that serbian team up and running!

Steve i would give you a big hug right now if you were here :)

    22. I completely agree. It’s disgraceful how a team expects to miss out the first four races when they’ve beaten a handful of teams to be given this opportunity.

I for one will not be welcoming them with open arms in Barcelona if the negotiations are successful.

      1. *Meant as a reply to Steve’s comment above.

    23. I never noticed the mini Jerez next to the track!? Is that a Karting track?

      1. Yep it’s a karting track. Either that or their testing on the ‘small’ one and the other one is for monster truck racing :D

      2. I saw it too, I think its a karting track.

        Jensons back on the track.

      3. Zoom in closer on the mini Jerez and theres a mini mini Jerez next to it.

      4. The mini track isn’t exactly a mini replica of the Jerez track, but very look alike though.
It has some small differences… just details, like the length of the two straights and stuff

    24. Is it just me or have McLaren not done any of the long-run race simulations that Ferrari and Williams have done? Cosworth must love Williams because they have been pretty much single handedly breaking that engine in for them. Lotus are doing some significant laps today though.

    25. did anyone see the Stefan GP webpage look fairly good , i dont know if this is old news but, they are talking about testing from 25th to 28th in Portimao.

    26. if you zoom in on the corner at the far right, there is what looks like another kart track on the inside

    27. Stefan GP and Kazuki Nakajima to take constructors and driver’s championship, anyone?

      1. :-) I think your getting just a little ahead of yourself. They don’t have an entry yet, and its not certain they will get one. I think there is a good chance that the Toyota will be far superior than all the new teams cars. Its unlikely though that it is superior to the big teams cars because……,well because its a Toyota. ;-) …also development has been on idle of late.

Also if they had just signed Michael Schumacher and Alonso, then hey they would have the drivers to get a world constructors crown. …But sorry Nakajima and Villeneuve? :-) the car has to be out and out the best for them to win I’d say.

…Anyway I’d like them to get the entry into F1 and I wish them well.

        1. Oops. Nick Fail! You were just joking right?

        2. Having a complete car is totally different to having a competitive car. And Toyota engines were the least powerful last year, imagine how they would fare with a full tank!

    28. OMG another red flag in the closing minutes

      It was caused by glock

    29. Trulli put in more than 140 laps! compare that to the 23 from Glock…

I guess we won’t see a VR car finishing a race ’till the summer.

    30. Button finishes with quickest time at Jerez, but it’s all pretty close.

    31. Well that’s it then.
Next week in Barcelona to heat us up for the first race!
See if VR can get more laps and Lotus more speed.
Last year the grid was really close together but I think this year the gaps may be a little bigger.

    32. Weather forecast looks really good for the Barcelona area from next Thursday onwards.

    33. I’ve been looking thru the Sauber run’s… very impressive!

The Guy put in a very long series of 80’s and 79’s sec. laps; that seems credible enough.

    34. 3rd Test all times, all days for those interested.

      Final update to spreadsheet…

That Sauber run was impressive but I think all but the new teams could run in the 1:18’s the top 4 in the 1:17s or less.

    35. Keith are you going in Barcelona?
