Boring race. Decent ending, but not spectacular.
This is forming into a Pirelli-fueled 2010. Red Bull have the best car now.
HUHHII (@huhhii)
8th July 2012, 14:39
Ferrari does. You need to have a superior car to get Massa in TOP-5. Only wrong tyre strategy took a victory away from Alonso.
Cyclops_PL (@cyclops_pl)
8th July 2012, 14:52
IMO the performance difference on different tires is too drastic in case of Ferrari. This ultimately makes for a worse car. Red Bull seems to have much better rounded package, capable of winning on very different tracks, different conditions and different tire strategies.
Eggry (@eggry)
8th July 2012, 15:12
Well I think it’s down to setup not car’s overall characteristics. This weekend was so changeable so teams’ setup should be compromised. Some more(Mclaren? maybe), some less(Red Bull?).
q85
8th July 2012, 15:29
The strategy was ok in terms of tyre order, not great but ok.
what killed it was pitting far to early on first stop. I called it at the time that they would be adding extra laps onto last stint for no reason and it would hurt them.
but as ever commentators totally missed the importance that error was. all they banged on about was the starting on the soft. No the error was not using the first stint to max and getting totally side tracked by what red bull were doing rather than concentrating on their own strategy.
They risk losing another title due to poor strategy.

Enigma (@enigma)
8th July 2012, 14:53
I think Ferrari’s strategy was good. They drove on hards with the heaviest car, and waited with the softs to the end in case of rain. They failed to win but I believe it’s because Webber and Red Bull were slightly faster today.

+2 on Ferrari strategy. As the practice runs showed the softs would work better when the track was rubbered in, which it was at the end. The car just didn´t like them. My hope is that Pirelly will make much harder tires, but with an even smaller “thread” depth. Pit stops would be as now, but the debree would be much less = more overtaking possibilities.
ben (@dubaemon)

debrit not debree, although we understood what you meant. as im frebch it helps…

8th July 2012, 17:36
I think you are wrong. Ferrari lost the race because the putted Alonso way too early in each of the pit stops. And Alonso had to run a lot of laps in the soft. They putt him after running just 15 laps in the hard tires in the first stint . And he had to do 15 laps on the soft in the last stint for a tire that only lasted 8-10 in the other drivers. So with that fact you can see the Ferrari strategist lost the race and Alonso once again was screwed over. Webber won because of that and not because he was driving better or faster than Alonso .

Pitting to early after first stint and two laps behind Hamilton. I would say that those are the mistakes which resulted in losing 1st place.

I dont share the same opinion, with a better strategy like the one red bull keeps choosing for Vettel the lotuses could have been fighting for the race, what in my opinion is spoiling all this latest races from canada till now is the DRS, simply not needed.

It was never going to be another Valencia (never thought I’d say that about Silverstone!), but nothing really happened. I think it might have been because most of the telecast focused on the British drivers, and they didn’t really do anything.

The FOM feed seemed to concentrate on the British drivers. I get that it’s the British Grand Prix, but there were half a dozen times when the cameras were fixed on Button or Hamilton while something more interesting was happening elsewhere – usually caused by Romain Grosjean – and I had to rely on the commentators to tell me about it rather than the FOM television director showing me it.

We certainly have been spoilt this season and especially so with the previous race. I think a lot of people have come down with a case of PVS (post Valencia syndrome [crappy acronym ftw!]). After such a fantastic race followed by an average one like today it’s easy to vote it lower. Keeping that in mind, I’ll give it a 7.

Good race. but another tyre lottery…
damonsmedley (@damonsmedley)
8th July 2012, 17:44
I’d say this was the least “lottery”-esque race of the year in terms of strategy. It was a very straightforward race with two obvious strategies. The primes were better than the options, and the only reason Ferrari didn’t know this is probably down to the fact they had so little dry running all weekend.
Eggry (@eggry)
9th July 2012, 6:19
@damonsmedley Why I’m saying lottery is unpredictable behaving of tyres. at least the option should be faster even last short no matter how condition is. Nobody expected it until the race started.
Oblong_Cheese (@oblong_cheese)
9th July 2012, 8:20
Surely you jest?
The teams had limited dry running. Nobody could predict the performance of the tyres. That’s not the fault of the tyre, and thus is not a “tyre lottery”.

It had a great battle between Hamilton & Alonso, the opening laps were amazing but after the first stint, it became pretty boring and even when Webber closed the gap and passed Alonso it hadn’t so much drama as expected. So overall, a grade of 5 out of 10 its what this race deserves…

Somewhere between 7 and 8.
Kind of enjoyed it even though it was somewhat boring… Wasn’t necessarily in the mood for a mental “impossible to follow”. race at Silverstone.
Some good moments and a clear answer to the question regarding who are the most powerful teams at the moment. Ferrari and Red Bull.
Glad to see Webber keeping ahead of Vettel. Good to see Massa getting his act straighter with every race. Decent race by the Lotuses challenging for the “third best” trophy. Too bad for Schumacher’s pace, and Mercedes’ in general, including McLaren.
Oh, and well done Maldonado…6th penalty this season soon come…

Had to go for a 6.
The opening few laps were total madness and great fun to watch, but as the race panned out it got dull and Lewis’s slow McLaren and DIR’s crash put a dampner on a brit doing well at the home race… but Webber coming back at Alonso at the end was nice.
Dissapointing race, but it had its moments.
Lin1876 (@lin1876)
8th July 2012, 14:49
First time I’ve really been frustrated by the tyre lottery, which dictated the result more than any other factor. If there is only one correct strategy then something is wrong. Having said that, it was a reasonably entertaining race which had its moments, and DRS wasn’t too bad (though it did rob us of a monumental scrap for the lead which would probably have got the race another point).
In all, a good 7.
dirgegirl (@dirgegirl)

Pretty good race! The first couple of laps were breathtaking and there were some good battles throughout. Mark Webber on Alonso at the end was great. I’d say a 6/10 (thought I accident voted 7). The start was great and I thought we were in for a great afternoon, but the action died down and the became average.

worrying as a Hamilton fan…mclaren were nowhere near the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull. Perhaps they went with more wing expecting wet weather but I’d say they probably have the 4th best car now behind Red Bull, Ferrari and the lotus in race trim.
Button probably has to concede the championship now, Hamilton is Mclarens only hope but suppose being as slow as they are at the moment they can do what they want with the drivers they’re in a battle to finish in the top 5 in the constructors at the moment

I had the disadvantage of watching it in Czech (not the language, but meh quality of commenters). Learnt from that how important a good commentary team is to enjoy the race!
First 5 laps were really nice, in the middle there was quite a lull, where only pitstops really changed the order. And the last 10 laps or so were good. Although it was a shame that FOM chose to follow Webber for the last lap instead of focussing on Kimi hunting Massa and a few other on track battles.

8th July 2012, 15:09
Only 5/10 I think.
The number of replays the director felt the need to show of the very straightforward DRS pass of Webber on Alonso for the lead says it all really.
Everyone in the points other than Schumacher, Button and Maldanado finished at most a few places from where they started, there was very little overtaking near the front, and not much interest in strategy as everyone did 2 stops.

8/10. I quite liked it. Not any overly crazy stuff going on, but still exiting with all the overtaking taking place. Especially some of the moves Grosjean pulled off where quite amazing. Also I do like it that nothing suddenly interupted the race. Cars breaking down etc creates alot of drama, but isn’t what i want to see. I rather watch a race like this with alot of overtaking and some drivers making mistakes, it’s more what’s racing is all about. Can’t wait for the German GP in two weeks :)

Overall I went with a generous 7, a decent race although not sufficient action throughout the race and the BBC commentary was very poor, they couldn’t really follow the development of battles properly such as Webber and Alonso at the end, I thought they spotted it reasonably late as well as the Schumi and Hamilton. On the other hand, teams still seem to pick a variety of strategies which remains good considering we’re at the half way point of the season.

Fairly run of the mill race. I was actually disappointed there wasn’t so much as a shower, mind you thats probably a good thing for the fans that went along. But … the worst feature is the “new” podium/interview system. Electronic flags??? And Canadian TV were so surprised that they cut Webber’s and Alonso’s “interview” with advertizing. Was it just our feed that also lost image and more often sound much more regularly than usual? Sheesh.

I thought it was an entertaining race. It did quieten down through the middle phase but when Webber started to catch Alonso it did spring back into life. Prior to that Lotus did make things exciting when they were battling with Hamilton and seeing their pure pace was pretty satisfying. I think the biggest disappointment for me is Sauber. Perez was terribly unfortunate and Kobayashi’s pit-stop didn’t help him at all. He was catching Button in the end but he lost so much time in the pits it just wasn’t to be. That’s not voting with my heart so much, but more just because they worked really hard on Friday, did plenty of laps, did well in qualifying but just lost their way in the race.

Strange comments so far…I quite liked the race. It was dry – no weather lottery and no SC intervention; just straight racing. There were battles going on for every position. Disappointed by the fact that the softs didn’t last for Fernando…they only needed to do 15 laps on them.
Solid performance from Massa…his best result in almost 2 years. Lotus needs to understand how to extend their pace during the last 1/3 of the race to the entire race distance – really they should have won at least 1 race till now.

It was an ok race, but it’s a shame that the leading couple got away in the first stint, it could have been more interesting with Massa and Vettel in the mix. Schumacher’s train ruined it a little bit, as Raikkonen did in Monaco. But it happens, I understand that.
Good racing between Mark and Fernando, good recovery from Grosjean. Yeah, there were some good battles, but nothing extraordinary.
The DRS seemed ok to me, it’s in a good place in my opinion, and overtaking was not so easy as someone is saying. But the tyres were a disaster. Pirelli made a mistake by bringing the Softs. They probably are too soft for Silverstone, Medium and Hard would have been bettere in my opinion.

The race itself was fine, but I was expecting more. Specifically, I was expecting a wet race to spice things up. After all the rain on Friday and Saturday, I think a few drivers would have found themselves running out of tyres, and that would have been fun to watch. Failing that, I was half-expecting a Lotus or a McLaren to make a charge onto the podium, and that didn’t materialise. Nevertheless, there were a couple of good battles, including the one between Alonso and Webber for the race lead. Are we even talking about the same race here??? Anything under 5 is just ridiculous, and being the British Gp I’m sure the McLaren fans are disappointed and that may reflect in the poll, but seriously the on-track action at the most part wasn’t always dependent on DRS. On such an aero dependent track the cars were still able to follow each other through the faster corners and make a move. The TV images didn’t show all the action but if you watched the timing you would’ve seen some interesting battles occur.

Agree with your post, I was disappointed not to see Hamilton, Schumacher make inroads, and Lotus really needs to get a good first half of the race sometime (well, GRO had in Valencia, only for it to go wrong after I suppose – not so helpful either :); this was quite a regular race in a way, but it was great to see the field so close and people fighting on track.

I think it’s a sign that teams are getting their head around these tires and finding where they stand in the grand scheme of things. Teams were able to recognise when the tires went off (except maybe for Mclaren), and got what they could for the race.

Just felt the race needed something to spice it up (rain/safety car etc…). Surprised at the lack of pace from McLaren and Mercedes but it was good to see both Ferrari and Lotus looking very competitive compared to the Red Bulls, especially after Vettel’s dominance in the first half of Valencia.
In terms of the championship battles, I’d say it’s Red Bull’s constructor’s championship to lose, given the consistency of both drivers. As for the driver’s championship, unless there’s a sudden upturn in form for McLaren/Lotus it’s looking like it’ll be between Alonso, Webber and Vettel.

People really think that race was boring?! Boring? That’s a bit of an exaggeration. This was a solid race with some great racing, a few spills along the way, and a change for the lead 4 laps from the end! Come on! People have been spoilt!

I thinks that, for Silverstone, it was boring. But overall, average. I liked first 5 laps, Alonso/Hamilton scrap and ending, but the rest was slightly dull. Podium ceremony was great, but too quick (they should have waited for more people to gather) but i hope that it will become standard in the future.

Good race. Way far of the best ones I saw on Silverstone, but a decent one, and Webber made it very interesting at the end.
My rate for the race is 6 out of 10.

Not quite the caliber of racing we’ve become accustomed to this year, but overall it wasn’t bad. Lead change with less than 5 laps to go, decent racing throughout, a bit of tyre strategy coming into play…can’t really complain, honestly. I gave it an 8/10, although in retrospect that was a bit generous. Maybe a 7 would’ve been more appropriate.

A reasonable race – 6
Good to see Mark win again though.

As a McLaren fan the race was disappointing. As a non-biased viewer it was slightly better than that. Given all the wet running earlier in the meeting, I was hoping for a wet track during the race. The drivers were used to it by that time, and while the results could have been similar (who knows?!), getting there would have certainly been more entertaining. I gave it a 7.

Amazing race.
Got bit frustrated by Schummi train otherwise would have been a massacre for 1st :D
Lotus gotta sort out qualifying, they simply start too far from leaders and with such close gaps it’s virtually impossible to gain so much back even with such strong race car as they have. Both Kimi and Romain had amazing wheel to wheel action.
Not sure what happened to McLaren, but they really need to have a look into where they took the wrong turn.
Maldonado needs a “coach” to sort out his mental presence during the race, he got all the speed of the champion but his state of mind is of the rookie. If he develops bit more intelligent approach, Williams would be in a much better position points wise.

was it just me or was he Ferrari much quicker through the high speed corners of maggots, becketts and chapel. also i gave the race a 5 it was a ok race but there was no real excitement, i think ferrari made a good decision with Alonso to run the hards at the start but they should have run longer stints so that he would hav been able to do less laps on the softs. well done to webber as always good racing between webber and alonso thats how you race each other not like maldonado and perez.

There are obviously too many Hamilton fans here as this was a great race with overtaking in many different points in the race. It was not clear at any point who’s race it was!

IMO it was a good, as opposed to a great race. I imagine most teams factored in for it be (at least in part ) a wet race. 2 distinct tyre strategys emerged. It was always going to be a major risk to use the soft tyres at the end of the race ?
Pirelli are getting unfair bad press about their tyres, they have been a major factor in what has so far been an incredible season. So far Ferari, Red Bull and Lotus seem to making a better job of working with the tyres as part of their package.
What is very worrying is what is happenig to McLaren ???

I voted 7 out of 10. I felt the race was pretty good but lacked the drama of the last race, but then that was hard to beat. The race was almost decided on the 1st lap with the tyre strategies clearly showing the best way to go about things.
I found this a shame as normally we can see at least 2 different ways of getting through the race at similar speeds. However having said that I think we saw some really good overtaking moves and proper ones at that. Shame we didn’t have a sprinkling of rain but overall an enjoyable race.

A 10 from me.Some really good battles.I wouldn’t have tipped Webber to win on merit half way through the race.
So sad that Mclaren had a forgettable race ;)

Well, it didn’t seem as action packed as some but it had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Perhaps being a Webber fan accounted for some of that… Very, very happy with the result and amazed by how perfectly Mark and Fernando drove. I can’t remember either of them putting a foot wrong all race.

I gave it a 6 nearly a 7, it was not a bad race it´s just that Valencia was so awesome.
Thank´s to Pirelli in nowadays at the end of every race we don´t now who´s gonna get the big prize.
I just want to pay my tribute to the British fans, they are undoubtly the most passioned and loyal F1 fans in the whole world.
I´ve never seen a Friday with so much attendance, on top of that it was raining cats and dogs!
Hats off to them.

It was probably more exciting for me seeing as it was my first Grand Prix live, but after watching it on TV there I’ll give it a solid 7. Some great overtaking, and plenty of battles through the field, but it got quite stale halfway through. Also DRS spoiled the conclusion for me.

I gave the race a 7.
I was expecting a wet race, so I was a bit disappointed when it was dry but at least the fans at the circuit had some better weather than earlier in the weekend.
