@kingshark, Out of interest, what is your reasoning for so many teams to win this season? Don’t you think the 4 cars of Mercedes and Ferrari combined will make the chance of a Toro Rosso or even Williams winning rather small? Red Bull I can understand, I myself expect them to win at some point, when they’ve got more power and the circuit suits them. But Williams and TR? Nah.
Drg
12th March 2016, 17:04
Only the first few races of 2012 were representative of the entire history of F1 if you take a look at Kingsharks comments over the years. Don’t get him started on Hamilton whatever you do. If I was his doctor I would hope his predictions across the last few years have to happen at some point or he might blow a gasket! :)
Kingshark (@kingshark)

@me4me
Mercedes and Ferrari = obvious, will win 18 out of 21 races combined.
Red Bull = fantastic chassis with improved engine
Toro Rosso = excellent and underrated chassis with great engine
Williams = good chassis with the best engine
Williams will win at either Austria or Silverstone
Red Bull and Toro Rosso will win at either Monaco/Hungary/Singapore in potentially rainy circumstances.
I expect this season to be like 2008. Two teams dominate most of the season, but there are some races that throw up some random results.
Just my $0.02
Only seasons like 2015 were representative for others apparently. “F1 has always been like this”. Lol no, it hasn’t.

Haha, very true @william-brierty! If it is a supernatural power I will be sure to employ it for more useful means, like electing US presidents.
On topic; I’m cautiously optimistic that he will fair rather better this year than last. The possible factors contributing to his hat trick of wins to close the season have been well discussed – principally whether Hamilton lost motivation – however I feel that rather sidetracks the strong form he showed post-Singapore modifications.
Had he not the misfortune of unreliability in Russia, and had more mettle at the first corners in Japan and the US, he could have perhaps added at least another win, perhaps more. His six pole positions on the trot was a decisive qualifying resurgence also.
It has the potential to be a very interesting title fight indeed if Rosberg and Hamilton do end up in a much tighter tussle. Which explains my slight optimism that, if the rumours of a notable to improvement to the red car are founded, leads me to tentatively conclude an upset is possible.
Fascinating prologue indeed. Let us hope the story doesn’t disappoint!

@vettel1 You’re probably a bit late on the US president – I’ve been backing Marco Rubio so predictably he’s facing oblivion right now. I guess the new Mars mission launched last month is a exit clause just in case people don’t fancy the most powerful man in the world being a narrow-minded scarecrow on a venomous and belligerent crusade against any that don’t share his passion for himself…
On-topic: happily the divide Rosberg needs to cross this season is between being a very, very good driver, capable of not just beating a teammate like Hamilton on a given weekend, but dominating him, and being a great driver capable of wringing every last point out of the opportunities afforded to him over an entire season.
Other than the accepted ‘greats’ of Vettel and Alonso, who, other than Rosberg, could have got eleven race wins and an almighty eighteen pole positions past Hamilton in a championship-winning car? That is the question I’ve been wrestling with over the winter, and there is nobody. Raikkonen is spent, Ricciardo’s 2014 form is increasingly looking like a flash in the pan, Button had to produce his best year ever in F1 to beat Hamilton in the same car, whilst Lewis had his worst season in F1, and Hulkenberg has all the ingredients but has an inexhaustible habit of failing to translate that into results.
I hope, in terms of his public perception at least, Rosberg can cross the Rubicon this year and be considered the top-line driver he is. He has consistently been ‘pretty exceptional’ throughout his F1 career; the problem is Hamilton has consistently been ‘utterly exceptional’ throughout his F1 career.

3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg?
Max, but not by a lot.
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault?
McLaren. Will be a better year for them, Renault will most likely have a year very similar to McLaren’s 2015
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently?
Pascal Wehrlein. As Much as I like Rio, I think Pascal is just a better driver.
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017?

Yes, but it will only be a 1 year deal. Really hope it’s staying for the long term, but just don’t trust Bernie to make the best decision for the sport.

Lewis will take it, but it won’t be until the last few races where he confirms it.

Esteban Gutierrez. Then Sergio, Kevin and Lewis.

One of the Manors. Will go for a long shot with Wehrlein, although Haryanto will retire more often!

Mexico.

Oof. So many variables.
1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year? Ferrari, definitely. Williams are the only other team I see possibly lucking into one, but I doubt it.
2. What will be the best result for Haas? Tough one. They kind of underperformed in testing, compared to (probably unreasonable) expectations, didn’t they? Sixth. Assuming they get things together, and I don’t see any reason to think they won’t.
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg? Verstappen. (I’m guessing that while FI might carry on their form from last year at first, development will be limited and STR will overtake them as the season goes on. Could be wrong.)
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault? McLaren.
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently? Yikes. I hate these questions. I’m a “teams” guy, not a “drivers” guy. :) Wehrlein, maybe?
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017? I have no idea. Despite what I just said, I hope so.
7. How many of the 11 teams will score points? I don’t see why it can’t be all of them, to be honest. Manor and Sauber might struggle, but I think they could pick up a few here and there.
8. Before the season ends, will Monza be confirmed as the host of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix? Tricky. I think it will be, but before the season ends? Hmm…
9. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy? Hamilton.
I’m going to skip 10-14, ‘cos I honestly don’t have the faintest idea. And, apart from the Monaco winner (I have this sneaky feeling it might be a surprise), I haven’t given those things much thought.
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017? Renault. Barring a sudden glaciation in the netherworld.
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? Could be late, if Ferrari have upped their game as much as they appear to. Brazil.
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year? Too many to pick just one. CVC selling up, the Monza will-they/won’t-they, the 2017 regs, Force India’s ongoing troubles, Sauber’s ongoing troubles…
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year? Canada. (I dunno. But you can never go far wrong in guessing Canada for this one.)
19: Who will be the constructors’ champions? Mercedes.
20: Who will be the drivers’ champion? Hamilton. Probably.

1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year?
Ferrari, wanted to add Williams or Red Bull, but it would take a crazy science fiction plot for that to happen
2. What will be the best result for Haas?
9th and it will take a frantic high attrition, maybe weather related, race for this to happen
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg?
Max, better car this season, more reliability, more maturity
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault?
McLaren – they should improve and Renault has more questions than answers at this point
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently?
Romain Grosjean
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017?
No. I believe he will have a better 2016 and retire of his own accord, officially.
7. How many of the 11 teams will score points?
All. With this high number of races the odds are increased of having several chaotic races with unusual results.
8. Before the season ends, will Monza be confirmed as the host of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix?
Yes. At least I hope so.
9. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy?
Hamilton
10. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race?
Marcus Ericsson, for a Sauber sell a seat temp pay driver.
11. And who will take their place?
Total guess: Raffaele Marciello – someone with support (Sauber needs it) and money behind them.
12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements?
Maldonado even though he isn’t there. OK, maybe one of the rookies.
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
Vettel
14. Who will crash out of the most races?
A rookie trying too hard, to be named later.
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017?
Renault. Nobody else will touch them. Not enough time to develop a new engine source even if they started right now.
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
Penultimate – Brazil between Vettel and Hamilton
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year?
Tie between 2017 rules debacle and Ecclestone’s departure/replacement.
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year?

2. What will be the best result for Haas? 8th
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg? Hulkenberg. Racecraft-wise they are similar in ability but FI will have a stronger car over the course of the season.
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault? McLaren. Both will find points hard to come by, however.
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently? Grosjean over Gutierrez
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017? No. He will play second fiddle to Vettel and Ferrari will opt for someone new in 2017.

Going for a prediction somewhere between optimistic and naive. Might as well, right?
1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year? Ferrari definitely, Williams, Red Bull and Force India if everything comes together on a race for them.
2. What will be the best result for Haas?[b/] 8th in the 8th race for R8main Grosjean.
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg? Hulkenberg, more points finishes leading to a higher average and total.
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault? It’ll be close, but Button and Alonso will beat Magnussen and Palmer.
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently? Pascal Wehrlein vs Ryo Harianto, 100% win rate.
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017? Yes, with Ferrari.
7. How many of the 11 teams will score points? 11. It’ll be 2009 all over again.
8. Before the season ends, will Monza be confirmed as the host of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix? No. The FIA will even put a date out in May for the Italian GP just to confuse everyone, then Monza will get a deal in January 2017.
9. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy? Whoever wins the Mercedes intra-team qualifying battle.
10. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race? Ryo Harianto. Not having paid up the entire seat yet leaves that door [i/]wiiide open.
11. And who will take their place? Alexander Rossi will be announced, only for a random, wealthier, GP2 driver to be promoted.
12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements? Tie between Max Verstappen and Esteban Gutierrez.
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
Kimi Raikkonen, after taking out Hamilton on the final lap. Lewis will deem it ‘mega not cool, man’ and Kimi will mumble something.
14. Who will crash out of the most races? Ryo Harianto. Despite not finishing the season.
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017? ‘Alfa Romeo’
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? Brazil
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year? The Nurburgring will not be able to host the 2017 German GP, after this is announced, Hockenheim will hold the 2017 German GP hostage, trying to negotiate better deals for organizers along with Silverstone, Spa and Monza. Bernie tells Hockenheim off and the German GP is off for 2017, but not before a whole lot of smoke and mirrors.
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year? Going by the less praised circuits producing the best racing lately; the Chinese Grand Prix.
19: Who will be the constructors’ champions? Mercedes
20: Who will be the drivers’ champion? My heart says Vettel, my head says Hamilton.

1. If any, I’d say Ferrari and then (most likely to least if we have crazy races): Williams, Force India, Red Bull
2. I think Grosjean could give us something to cheer about, but maybe only about 8th
3. This could be tough, but depending on the Toro Rosso reliability I’d say Hulkenberg
4. This could be tough due to reliability, but I’ll say Renault unless the McLaren is a lot better
5. I think it’ll be Grosjean, followed by Vettel and Wehrlein
6. Ferrari will need to be ready for the big rule changes, so maybe only for 2017
7. If Monaco or somewhere else has lots of DNFs, we could even have all 11 teams score
8. Yes, but only to then to revert to provisional status
9. Lewis Hamilton
10. If anyone, I’d say Haryanto – otherwise this is hard to answer as we don’t know who’ll be ill etc
11. Rossi, if it’s Haryanto
12. With Maldonado not racing, this could be Gutierrez / Verstappen / Haryanto. But with Verstappen already close to a race ban, we’ll need to watch his total carefully
13. Rosberg has won the last three, but I don’t see him matching Senna’s run (1989-1993) so I’ll say Vettel
14. Harder without Maldonado, but will say Haryanto until he’s comfortable
15. Renault, because no other manufacturer wants to detract from their main efforts
16. I don’t see it being wrapped up early, so will say Abu Dhabi. Races could yet be cancelled and make this complicated.
17. Rule changes for 2017 and beyond; possible end of the Bernie era; Qualifying reverting to the 2015 system for 2017
18. Hungary’s being resurfaced for 2016, so I’ll say Bahrain or COTA. But let’s hope all the races are exciting this year with lots of non-DRS action!
19. Mercedes, maybe even by a bigger margin than 2014 or 2015
20. I think Lewis will be fine early on but struggle later on with his busy social life – he may just scrape it this year

1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year?
Ferrari, Red-Bull
2. What will be the best result for Haas?
8th
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg?
Too close to call. Hulkenberg will have a hard time with Perez but I bet that Toro Rosso will be moving backwards as the season progress (due to 2015 engine). Hulkneberg eventually.
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault?
Renault as I think they will start the year better and developed better thorughout the year, although McLaren will get poitns from the 2 drivers and Renault will mostyl get them from Magnussen.
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently? Difficult choice between Vettel, Grosjen and Magnussen. Because I think Palmer will suck big time, Magnussen will have a bigger win in qualifying.
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017?
No
7. How many of the 11 teams will score points?
I really believe all 11 teams can score points because I am betting on more DNF but due to scraps when racing (not so much due to technical issues)
8. Before the season ends, will Monza be confirmed as the host of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix?
Yes, around the Italian GP
9. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy?
Rosberg
10. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race?
I think Renault would want to replace Palmer very soon but not sure they will do it. I guess Haryanto will run himself into troubles
11. And who will take their place?
Alexander Rossi
12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements?
Haryanto is a good call but he will always be too further back. I bet on Sainz due to last year even though I don’t think he deserves this…
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
Vettel
14. Who will crash out of the most races?
Haryanto
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017?
They will be Renault but not sure how they will be badged, guess TAG-Heuer still.
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
This one will go to the wire (I wish) so Abu-Dhabi
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year?
I am not sure if the new qualyfing will drag throughout the year so I guess it will be the 2017 rules (and constant changing). Is this considered political? If not, then Bernie’s supposed replacement…
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year?
Hungarian GP
19. Who will be the constructors’ champions?
Mercedes
20. Who will be the drivers’ champion?
Vettel. Because I think Hamilton and Rosberg will steal points from each other and ruin some races and Vettel will take all chances. He managed to be on the hunt for so long last year, this year he might even steal it.
Of course this is a lot of wishful thinking…

1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year? Ferrari and Force India
2. What will be the best result for Haas? Romain Grosjean, at the Italian Grand Prix, will score Haas’ first points. Two of them.
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg? Nico Hulkenberg – at least twice as many.
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault? Renault, though McLaren will be the faster of the two by season’s end.
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently? Pascal Wehrlein will have a 100% record against Rio Haryanto, but the best record of the full-season rivalries will go to Sebastian Vettel (against Kimi Raikkonen).
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017? No. He will be bored of F1’s silliness and go find something more fun to do. I stand by this even if he surprises me and wins the 2016 world title.
7. How many of the 11 teams will score points? All of them. Pascal Wehrlien and Alexander Rossi will get slightly-lucky 10th places at different tracks, Romain Grosjean will get a 9th at Monza and all other teams will have multiple points finishes for both their drivers.
8. Before the season ends, will Monza be confirmed as the host of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix? No. Bernie will tease the circuit owners before confirming Monza the week after the race.
9. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy? Lewis Hamilton. He will get the trophy in 2019.
10. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race? Rio Haryanto at, or immediately after, the British Grand Prix.
11. And who will take their place? Alexander Rossi will take Rio’s place and prove himself every inch Pascal Wehrlien’s equal.
12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements? Max Verstappen will come within an inch of a race ban before finally getting the hint and calming down his driving.
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix? Sebastian Vettel
14. Who will crash out of the most races? Jolyon Palmer – though at least half of these will be technically-induced rather than through either his own mistakes or those of other drivers. (I further predict Rio Haryanto to have the most spectacular individual crash, but at the time I predict Rio will leave, he won’t have as many total crashes as Jolyon).
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017? None
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? The USA, after several races of temporary fakeness from the new qualifying format and the new tyres delayed the denouement artificially.
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year? It will be a tie between Pirelli being forced to reconfigure its tyres mid-season due to the compounds being too dangerous for new-format qualifying and the fall of Vijay Mallya and its effect on Force India (several other psuedopolitical stories will come close to the boil but not hit centre-stage until 2017).
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year? Japan, unless it rains for most of the Belgian Grand Prix, in which case Belgium will be the most exciting. Canada will be 3rd most exciting.

12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements? Rio Haryanto. Various instances of blocking in qualifying, ignoring blue flags, speeding in the pits and safety car violations I suspect.
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix? Lewis Hamilton. 2014 and 2015’s shenanigans cut him deep, he’ll be keen to right those wrongs.
14. Who will crash out of the most races? Rio Haryanto. I was going to say Gutierrez or Palmer, but Haryanto will probably bin it significantly more often.
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017? Renault. Branded Timex or somesuch.
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? Brazil.
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year? Bernie’s attempts to reign in the power of Mercedes and Ferrari.
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year? Canada.
19. Constructors Champion? Mercedes
20. Drivers Champion? Hamilton

1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year?
Ferrari, Williams, Red Bull and maybe a fluke win, that is an optimistic answer and in reality I wouldn’t be surprised if it was only Mercedes and Ferrari.
2. What will be the best result for Haas?
12th I think they will be competitive with other teams at the back but with the reliability in modern F1 it has become harder for teams lower down to get in the points as often.
3. Who will score more points: Max Verstappen or Nico Hulkenberg?
Verstappen. Over the course of the season unless off track problems with their owners hamper Force India too much then the Force India will probably be the better car but if Verstappen continues his upward trajectory he should make up for the difference in car performance.
4. Which team will score more points: McLaren or Renault?
McLaren probably have the better chassis and defiantly have the better drivers but Renault probably still have the better power unit. If the Honda is not too far back in performance and just as importantly it is reliable I would choose McLaren.
5. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most frequently?
I would say the biggest gap in team-mates is probably at Manor so I would say Wehrlein.
6. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2017?
No, I believe that his current contract finishes at the end of this season and I don’t think he will be close enough to Vettel this year to earn another one.
7. How many of the 11 teams will score points?
Nine, unless overall reliability is poor I just don’t think there will be many chances for teams at the back to score points. I hope I am wrong and that teams at the back are competitive enough to score points without having to hope others retire.
8. Before the season ends, will Monza be confirmed as the host of the 2017 Italian Grand Prix?
Yes, but Ecclestone will do doubt have squeezed some more money from somewhere for the race to go ahead.
9. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy?
Hamilton, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Rosberg did.
10. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race?
I think we will only get a change if the funds run out for a pay driver or a driver is injured.
11. And who will take their place?
As I haven’t really answered which driver will be replaced I have no idea who the replacement will be.
12. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements?
With Maldonado gone this is a harder question than in recent years, I will say a rookie and so Haryanto.
13. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
Vettel.
14. Who will crash out of the most races?
Again I will say and Haryanto.
15. Whose engines will Red Bull use in 2017?
I don’t see any new engine makers coming in and all Red Bull’s whinging have put suppliers off, unless Honda are forced to supply Red Bull, they will have the same as this year in a rebadged Renault.
16. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
It would be nice if it went to the final race but I will say the penultimate race at Brazil.
17. What will be the biggest political story of the year?
Do we define this as anything not directly related to what happens on track this year? If so probably the regulations for future seasons but this being F1 there are a lot of possible choices, you could also have engines, Red Bull whinging about something, Ecclestone suggesting something stupid and outlandish, the division of money in F1, the governance of F1 the list goes on and on, sadly.
18. What will be the most entertaining race of the year?
I will choose one of my favourites in Canada.
19. Who will be the constructors’ champions?
Mercedes, from testing they still seem the team to beat and even if Ferrari catch up I think the Mercedes driver pairing will outscore the Ferrari drivers.
20. Who will be the driver’s champion?
This is a tough one, with the Mercedes seemingly still the quickest one of their drivers will be favourite but which one? If Hamilton is at his best all season then he should beat Rosberg but if he doesn’t have full motivation or if his jet set lifestyle starts to have too much of a negative impact than Rosberg will come out on top. However if Ferrari manage to catch up than I can see the Mercedes drivers taking points off each other and Vettel being champion, in a situation like in 1986.
If I had to pick one I would say Hamilton.
