In just two weeks’ time we’ll already known the winner of the first grand prix of the 2017 F1 season.
Testing has given us some tantalising glimpses of the season ahead. Is the Ferrari really that quick? What do Mercedes and Red Bull have up their sleeves for round one?
For others there were signs of trouble ahead. McLaren attracted attention for all the wrong reasons as their latest Honda power unit failed repeatedly. The Renault teams were also beset by niggling power unit problems.
When the serious action begins this could soon look very different. With that in mind, how do you think the year ahead is going to pan out? It’s time for F1 Fanatic’s traditional pre-season 20 questions:

A guy who has retired from motorsport substituting for Kvyat and a guy who has not been on pole for nine years receiving the FIA pole position trophy; nice. Saying that, as someone who predicted a Marco Rubio presidency this time last year, you might actually be spot on…

@william-brierty, it is more than just that – Kimi’s record in terms of pole positions is very low, with only 16 to his name.
It’s a record which puts him equal with Felipe Massa and behind Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso – in fact, Kimi’s performances are rather telling in one respect. Whilst he has a disproportionately low number of pole positions to his name, when you compare him to Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso (the other championship winning drivers on the grid), he has a disproportionately high number of fastest laps to his name (43, compared to 28 for Vettel, 31 for Hamilton and 22 for Alonso).
It was rather underlined by the fact that, in 2008, he only took two pole positions but ten fastest laps (more than the rest of the grid combined) – he’s a driver who doesn’t place a priority on being the fastest outright over a single lap, but the fastest overall over a number of laps in race trim.
As an aside, Keith, I think you are being a little cheeky with your list of 20 questions – you say that they are about the 2017 season, but strictly speaking three of them are about the 2018 season. I also don’t want to cause offence, but a few of them look like you’ve just copied and pasted them year after year – the question about the Monaco GP and which driver will crash the most have been repeated in that exact same order four years in a row now.

Kimi i and Vettel set a good number of their fastest race laps with no possibility of changing their finishing position. Hamilton or Rosberg could easily have set more, but didn’t see the need to.

Hey @william-brierty,
Re Kvyat –> Webber, well I’m predicting that Kvyat will muck it up badly in Melbourne, Toro Rosso will need a new driver and Webbo would be there for the interviews, so…
Re: Kimi winning pole trophy, well … Kimi. But I reckon it’s gunna be one of those years where Seb & Kimi take too many points and poles off each other, while Lewis gets a consistent early run against Valtieri such that Bottas will be asked to play the team game for WDC points later in the season.
Looking forward to it, whatever happens :)

Mercedes not to win a race this year? They are undoubtedly favourites to win the majority of races, strongest PU, reigning champions of both trophies for 3 years, sand bag every testing season you are not exercising any logic in your statement. Daniel Ricciardo to take most pole positions? Another assertion with zero logic exercised – no offence intended but come on get back to reality, a Mercedes driver will win the Pole Position trophy most likely Hamilton. This may not sit well with you on an emotional perspective but the odds are stacked heavily in Mercedes corner.
Kimi to be World Champion? There is a theme to your posts!! If indeed a Ferrari Driver wins the Drivers Title the team will be putting their might behind Vettel, Kimi is his number 2.

4. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most often? – Nico Hulkenberg
5. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2018? – Yes; most blinkered team ever to peruse the driver market

8. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race? – Daniil Kvyat

15. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? – Brazilian Grand Prix

18. Who will finish last in the constructors’ championship? – Sauber
19. Who will win the constructors’ championship? – Mercedes
20. Who will win the drivers’ championship? – Daniel Ricciardo (wishful thinking maybe, but on the evidence of last year, if Red Bull can get Daniel within range of Mercedes and Ferrari, the guy has undoubtedly got the skills to take the fight to the likes of Hamilton and Vettel. I would be disappointed if a driver of his quality does not manage to take a title in his career, and this might be the best opportunity he will ever have)

A few extra questions that I came up with:
21. Where will Bottas’ first win be – Russia
22. Who will win the Verstappen-Ricciardo battle – That’s just too controversial to answer.
23. Will Bottas get a contract extension – Yes
24. What will McLaren’s highest position be – A lucky 7th
25. Who will be the best driver in 2017 – I suspect that the new regs will mean a really strong season for Vettel.

27. Will the fastest car in Australia be the same as the fastest car in Abu Dhabi – Yes (Mercedes)
28. How many races will it take for McLaren to score points – 5

30. Will McLaren’s fallout with Honda (assuming that there is one) be bigger than Red Bull’s with Renault in 2015 – No
31. Who will be the biggest (positive) surprise of 2017 – Ocon.
32. Who will have the biggest flop in performance – Perez won’t flop, but his with his greatest strength of tyre management no longer relevant, he won’t be the star that he was last year. The battle between him and Ocon will be an interesting one to view.

If no one gets replaced, no one is the replacement. Otherwise, Giovanazzi seems set as the replacment if any of the 6 Ferrari-powered cars needs a driver, so he’s probably got the best chances.

1. Other than Mercedes, which teams will win races this year?
I’m guessing there will be a few for Red Bull and hopefully Ferrari. I’d love to see a win from Williams or Force India, although I don’t see it realistically happening.
2. What will be the best result for Renault?
Anyone’s guess, but a high points finish, possibly 3rd towards the end of the year.
3. Which team will score more points: Williams or Force India?
Williams look strong and have traditionally done well when the regulations have changed. I also fear Force India may have peaked for the time being. Probably Williams.
4. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most often?
Lance Stroll out-qualifying Massa, possibly. It also depends how quick Bottas is on one lap – Hamilton could out-quality Bottas.
5. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2018?
Yes, although possibly not with Ferrari.
6. Will Fernando Alonso remain on the grid for 2018?
If he can find a seat at Renault, Ferrari, or Mercedes, then yes. I’d say he’s more likely to do that than leave.
7. Who will win the FIA pole position trophy?
Hamilton.
8. Who will be the first driver to be replaced or substituted for a race?
Guessing not Alonso this year. Anyone’s guess. Stroll?
9. And who will take their place?
I chose Stroll because the answer to this is easy: Di Resta.
10. Which driver will collect the most penalty points for driving infringements?
I have a feeling Stroll, because they tend to be harsher to new drivers. Although it depends how refined Vandoorne is.
11. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
Ricciardo (I hope!)
12. Who will crash out of the most races?
It’s a lottery, going to make a random guess of Ericsson.
13. Will Pirelli resort to using their ‘backup’ 2016-style high-degradation tyres?
No.
14: Whose engines will McLaren use in 2018?
Honda, probably. I don’t see them changing now, unless there is a major fallout.
15. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
Possibly Mexico or Brazil. I’ll guess Brazil.
16. What will be the biggest political story of the year?
The effect Brexit might have could be one, although more internally within F1, Ross Brawn’s future plans (such as doing away with DRS). Although it’s already big, and most likely won’t stir controversy in the way Bernie did. The EU investigation will be a big story, but given how slow it has been I don’t think it will be massive. Not so political, but I think the halo will be mentioned a lot. I think tyres will be less mentioned negatively.
17. What will be the most entertaining race of the year?
Bahrain seems to have become a regular for entertainment, although these new regulations could have any effect. Australia will be very entertaining. However, I’m going to guess Malaysia.
18. Who will finish last in the constructors’ championship?
Sadly, Sauber of course

It is rather surprising that nearly 30% have voted for Vettel and only 7% for Bottas. Remember over the last 3 years that Mercedes has been well ahead of Ferrari. Even when Bottas was in his Williams, there were plenty of races in 2015 where he managed to defend against Vettel and Kimi extremely well. And Bottas was clearly in a weaker car back then. With Bottas in what will probably be the best team as well as being one of the most consistent driver on the grid, I think Vettel would have a tough time beating him. Also, I’d say Vettel’s performance has gone down a little last season. Not that I don’t think he’s strong but I think it is unlikely Vettel’s Ferrari will have enough pace to beat either of the Mercedes drivers. It is more likely that Ferrari will be nearly as strong and maybe better at some circuits. I’m not a fan of Hamilton at all but I do rate him highly as a driver but them I also rate Bottas a lot higher than most do. I think Mercedes will be hiding something. I’m still fairly sure it will be a Mercedes 1 2 again. Ferrari will almost certainly be the 2nd best team though this year and I do expect them to be closer to Mercedes than Red Bull or Ferrari were in the last few years. I expect Vettel to beat Kimi still.

Why do you think Ferrari won’t win this year? Is it based on their previous year records or the car is still not there in your view? Just curious.

@angelicdarkness I’m not convinced what we’ve seen so far is a realistic impression of how competitive the cars will be:

Questions 5, 6 are interesting. Clearly both Alonso and Kimi are still fast and has loads of experience. The return to wider tires with more grip and pace through corners means experience will be a crucial factor at least in the early races. At the moment Mclaren-Honda is not a strong boat and plenty of holes have to be plugged just to keep sailing (in the midfield) as the season continues. So for Alonso, I guess its again a question of patience. If he runs out of patience, and there are no top seats in 2018, it is most likely curtain call. Ferrari seems to be a competitive car so far from testing results. For Kimi, it is a question of consistency. If he remains on par with Vettel and even betters him in some races, his chances for 2018 will be strong. Two ace drivers may not be Ferrari’s priority, as long as existing are quick and consistent.

True but really, who else has been in the top 3 amongst teams in recent years? Without McLaren there, these 3 are F1’s elite. Ie. F1’s predictability is not new. Here’s hoping there’s some close racing at least. It would be fantastic if there was some variety of winners from the top 3 teams.

4. Which driver will out-qualify his team mate most often?
Sainz
5. Will Kimi Raikkonen remain on the grid for 2018?
I didn’t think he would still be here in 2017 so I wouldn’t be surprised if he is still here in 2018, but I think it may depend on who else is available and if Vettel stays or goes.
6. Will Fernando Alonso remain on the grid for 2018?
Yes.

I think it will be between Hamilton and Vettel and which car is best in qualifying the Mercedes or the Ferrari, I will say Hamilton.

I will say Stroll as he is the youngest and has the least experience.

Again I will say Stroll because he is the youngest and has the least experience.

No.

Brazil.

I normally choose either Canada or Brazil, so I will say Brazil this year.
18. Who will finish last in the constructors’ championship?
Sauber.
19. Who will win the constructors’ championship?
Mercedes.
20. Who will win the drivers’ championship?
I think it will come down to Hamilton and Vettel and as I think Mercedes still has the best car I will say Hamilton.
